Unfortunately, until 2010 Arenal Volcano was Costa Rica’s most active volcano, with its regular lava, gas, and ash emissions.
HISTORY CLASS: After nearly 400 years of inactivity, Arenal began erupting again in 1968, burying over 5 mi² (15 km²) in rocks, lava, and ash and killing many people. The eruptive cycle paused in 2010 as the volcano entered an indefinite resting phase.
Currently, you can only witness lava flowing from its peak.

From the ranger station at the Arenal National Park entrance, you can choose from TWO hiking trails: one that leads east 0.8 miles to a mirador, a lookout point, or secondly, the Las Coladas trail. The trail then continues east another 1.7 miles (2.8 km).

How To Get To Arenal Volcano National Park?
Located in the northern part of Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano is 90 kilometers (56 miles) northwest of San Jose in the Alajuela Province.
Traveling from San Jose to Arenal Volcano is relatively straightforward, offering a scenic journey through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes.
By car, the trip can take around 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The most direct route is via Route 1 (Pan-American Highway) to Route 142, which leads directly to the park.
