Catarata Rio Agrio Hike
This hike takes you to Catarata Rio Agrio, through a clear, well-kept trail in the lush rainforest.
The gentle descent towards the majestic waterfall offers a manageable trek of approximately 30 MINUTES (1,5 kilometers) suitable for most fitness levels (moderate hike).
Once you’ve checked in at the reception, take a brief hike up the hill toward the trail entrance (5–10 minutes). The entrance is to the right of the DINO LAND ENTRANCE. You can also access this trail from the end of the Dino Land exhibit.
The trail leading to the Catarata Rio Agrio waterfall is well-maintained, mostly consisting of CONCRETE. However, it is important to note that it can become wet and slippery at times. Along the way, you will encounter a few steeper inclines and steps.
As you hike, you will pass by three bridges that run over fast-flowing rivers, and you’ll walk through a canyon. Finally, your destination awaits: the Rio Agrio waterfall, about 50 meters (165 feet) from the bottom of the canyon. At the bottom, a small pool forms with boulders all around. The water then spills out into the river on the right.
To fully enjoy the experience, remember to wear suitable hiking boots for potentially slippery sections. Don’t forget your camera to capture the breathtaking landscape and the stunning cascade.
Fun Fact: The vegetation and river make you feel like you are in the Jurassic Park movies, especially with the rivers and canyons. I started to understand why they put dinosaurs on the trail because I really felt like a dinosaur could have stepped out in front of me at any moment!

At times, when rainfall has been consistently heavy and continuous, especially during tropical storms, the color of the waters may not appear blue.
This phenomenon is typically observed in September, October, and November, and December is also known for its rainfall.
However, there is no cause for concern, as the river will soon regain its stunning blue color.
Getting to Catarata Rio Agrio from San José
By Car
Starting from San José, the drive in a 4×4 to Catarata Rio Agrio is an adventure in itself through Costa Rica’s lush landscapes.
Follow Route 1 north to Ciudad Quesada, and then continue on Route 4 heading towards Bijagua de Upala.
The journey typically takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic conditions.
By Bus
If public transport is your preferred mode of travel, you can catch a bus from San José to Bijagua from Terminal 7-10. Expect to transfer buses in Cañas if a direct service is unavailable.
The trip might take approximately 4 to 5 hours, and it’s important to plan the timing of your transfer accurately. On arrival in Bijagua, you may require a taxi or a local shuttle to reach the final stretch to the Catarata Rio Agrio waterfall entrance, which should take no more than 30 minutes.
