We’ll be honest, Colombia wasn’t what we expected. It was so much better. Warmer, wilder, and more beautiful than we could have imagined, it’s a country that has earned every bit of the hype.

Colombia sits on the equator, giving it a tropical climate that stays warm year-round but conditions vary dramatically by region and altitude. Coastal cities like Cartagena are hot and humid (28–32°C), while Bogotá’s high altitude keeps temperatures mild around 14°C, and Medellín earns its nickname “City of Eternal Spring” at a pleasant 22°C.

The best time to visit Colombia is December to March, the main dry season, when sunshine is most reliable across the country. July and August offer a second dry window, while April-June and October-November bring the heaviest rainfall though even then, mornings are often clear.
Monthly temperature & travel conditions
Spanish is the official language, and while English is spoken in tourist areas, it is less common than in Mexico or Costa Rica. Knowing a few basic Spanish phrases will make a big difference, especially outside major cities.
The currency is the Colombian peso (COP), and cash is still widely used, especially in smaller towns and local spots. Cards are accepted in cities, but it is best to carry cash for taxis, markets, and rural areas.
Most travelers from the EU, US, UK, and Canada can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days, with the option to extend. You will need a valid passport and may be asked for proof of onward travel.
Colombia uses type A and B plugs, similar to the US, with a standard voltage of 110V. If you are traveling from Europe, you will need a plug adapter.Shop your international plug.
We felt super safe in the tourist areas, but keep in mind that safety varies by region. It is important to stay informed and avoid certain neighborhoods. Keep an eye on your belongings and avoid displaying valuables.
Driving is possible but not always recommended in cities due to traffic and local driving styles. For remote areas like the Coffee Region or Tayrona, renting a car or joining a tour is often the better option. Fuel prices are moderate at around $0.80-$1.10 per litre, though prices fluctuate so check current rates before your trip.
