Río Verde is a river that is nestled in the heart of Colombia, near a town called San Francisco in the district of Antioquia! It’s super famous for its rafting opportunities.

This adventurous destination is often only accessible through an AMAZING SCENIC DRIVE through the Andean mountains, offering beautiful views of the lush green surroundings.

From Medellin, it takes about 2 hours to reach the city of San Francisco (depending on traffic), from which you can start your adventure!

Top Things To Do in Río Verde

1) White-Water Rafting

Rafting programs often include guides, safety equipment, and even a midday meal on the riverbank. Rafting in Río Verde is well-known for its thrilling white-water rafting. Experience the Rio Verde River’s rapids, which feature Class III and IV rapids that offer an exciting challenge for daring individuals.

Based on our last visit, this is included in the activity: 

• Meet at 6:00 a.m. at our office at Hostel Masaya, El Poblado, Medellín.
• 1 ½-hour journey to our operation base.
• Enjoy breakfast overlooking the mountains.
• A 1-hour journey by 4×4 to the town of Boquerón.
• Hike 1 ½ hours from Boquerón down the canyon as mules carry the gear.
• Cool off with a swim in the pristine water.
• Enjoy a traditional lunch on a beach.
• Receive a safety briefing and river rescue training.
• Raft the magnificent Rio Verde and Rio Samaná for over 25 km.
• Drive back to Medellín, arriving around 7 PM.

2) Paragliding

Paragliding is a must-do activity in the area! With an instructor by your side, you’ll fly in a lightweight, foot-launched glider aircraft, only propelled by wind and gravity. It’s amazing to fly over the Andean mountains! For us, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

3) Kayaking Course

Ever wanted to learn kayaking like a pro? On the Rio Verde river, you get the opportunity! Some courses even offer KAYAK ROLLING LESSONS, which teach how to right a capsized kayak. You’ll also learn about paddling techniques, safety procedures, and navigation skills.

4) Multi-Day Rafting Trips

Do you not get enough of rafting? Then you should totally nook a multi-day rafting trip. You’ll camp at riverbanks at night, see wildlife, and look at the stars. We can definitely recommend this activity!

From Medellín:

• By Bus: The most cost-effective method is taking a bus from Medellín to San Francisco, Antioquia. This journey takes between three and four hours, offering stunning views of the Colombian countryside. Although it’s not the fastest option, it’s a popular choice due to its affordability.

• By Car: If you prefer driving, you can rent a car and take the journey on your own. The drive from Medellín to San Francisco takes 2 hours. This allows you to explore at your own pace and enjoy the scenic landscapes along the way.

From Bogotá:

• By Bus: The most cost-effective method is taking a bus from Bogotá to San Francisco, Antioquia. This journey takes around 9 hours, offering beautiful views of the Colombian countryside.
