With origins dating back to prehistoric times, Setenil de las Bodegas has been a melting pot of cultures and civilizations, each leaving its own indelible mark on the town’s character.

Why, we can see you wondering. Read it below!

Prehistoric Origins

Believe it or not, Setenil de las Bodegas’ story began THOUSANDS of years ago in the prehistoric era.

Archaeological findings suggest that the area was inhabited by ancient settlers who took advantage of the NATURAL CAVES carved into the cliffs.

These early inhabitants recognized the potential of these caves as SHELTER from the elements, paving the way for the town’s fascinating architectural landscape that we see today.

Roman Rule

Fast forward to the Roman period, and Setenil de las Bodegas continued to flourish due to its strategic location.

Nestled along the ancient Roman road connecting Acinipo (Ronda la Vieja) to Olvera, the town became an important STOPOVER for travelers and traders.

It’s believed that during this time, the villagers began cultivating vineyards, giving rise to the town’s name “Setenil” – derived from the Latin words “septem nihil,” meaning “seven times nothing” – a reference to the seven attempts required to conquer the land and establish productive vineyards.

Moorish Influence

The Moorish occupation of Spain left a significant impact on Setenil de las Bodegas, as evident in its narrow, winding streets and distinct architectural features.

The Moors fortified the town with a castle and walls during the 12th century, recognizing its strategic value as a stronghold against Christian forces.

Many of the town’s iconic white-washed houses built into the cliffs can be traced back to this period, showcasing the ingenious engineering and architectural prowess of the Moors.

Influence is still visible today!

Today, you can still see remnants of these historical periods as you explore the village, from the ruins of the MOORISCH castle to the beautiful CHURCHES built during the Christian Reconquista.

Architecture of Setenil de Las Bodegas

Architecture

Setenil de las Bodegas boasts a unique architectural landscape where houses and streets are carved directly into the cliffs.

This striking feature sets it apart from other traditional towns, making it a fascinating travel destination.

This ingenious design provides natural protection from the elements, as the rock formations offer insulation against both heat and cold.

The overhanging cliffs also shield the dwellings from rain and strong winds, creating a comfortable living environment for the inhabitants.

Additionally, these cliffside homes blend seamlessly with their surroundings, resulting in a visually captivating atmosphere that draws visitors from all over the world.

Among the notable architectural highlights of Setenil de las Bodegas are the Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra.

The Cuevas del Sol (Caves of the Sun) are a series of houses carved into the sunlit southern side of the cliffs, offering warmth and natural light to the residents.

On the other hand, the Cuevas de la Sombra (Caves of the Shadow) are situated on the northern side of the cliffs, providing cooler temperatures and shade during the hot summer months.

These contrasting cave dwellings showcase the resourcefulness and adaptability of the town’s early inhabitants, who expertly utilized the natural landscape to create a remarkable and enduring architectural legacy.
