Reasons to visit Hiva Oa
There are a few reasons why we love Hiva Oa so much. Not only does it have a jungle, pristine white sand beaches, and a turquoise lagoon, but it also has many cultural sites, waterfalls, and some of the best diving spots in the world.
Even National Geographic has written about Hiva Oa!
Let’s take a closer look at the best reasons why Hiva Oa is worth a visit during your trip!
Culture and tikis
Hiva Oa is the CRADLE OF POLYNESIAN CULTURE.
The island has a very long and interesting history, with ancient TIKIS (sacred stone statues) and ceremonial sites that date back hundreds of years.
The me’ae Iipona in Puamau is a must-visit, home to some of the largest tikis in Polynesia, including the famous Tiki Takaii, which is 2m67 long and named after a warrior chief who was famous for his strength.
However, the vast majority of tikis seem to have no facial expression other than “stern.”

Nature and waterfalls
Hiva Oa has cliffs, lush valleys, and pristine beaches, making it the perfect combination for being called ‘paradise.’
The island’s terrain is perfect for 4×4 tours, with views like the Bay of Hanaiapa.
You can also explore Tehueto Valley, famous for its vegetation and WATERFALLS.
Don’t visit the valley without visiting the Tehueto petroglyphs. There, you’ll find a massive rock with carvings on two sides, including stylized human figures.
The petroglyphs are hidden in the Tahauku Valley, about 2.5 km (1.5 miles) inland from Tahauku Bay.

KEEP IN MIND: The trail is often overgrown and difficult to navigate. So, we highly recommend hiring a local guide for this hike. Your Accommodation will know the right person for the job!
For a private and personal experience, visit Temetiu Beach, which has soft sand and clear waters and is ideal for a relaxing afternoon!
INSIDER TIP: Bring sturdy walking shoes to explore the island. The hikes are quite challenging, but the views from Mount Temetiu (the island’s highest point at 1,213 meters/3,980 feet) are well worth the effort and Instagram picture!

Must-See Attractions
The town of Atuona
Atuona, the largest town on Hiva Oa, is the island’s cultural and administrative center.
Atuona is a 30-minute drive from the airport. Its population is around 2,000 locals.
The town has a hospital, a medical and dental office, a post office equipped with satellite phone services, and a bank with an ATM.
There is also a Catholic church and a Protestant church.
Atuona, at the foot of Mount Temetiu, offers history, art, and local life.

In the city, the paepae—traditional dry-stone houses—symbolize the Marquesans’ craftsmanship.
The ancient art of tatau (tattooing) also remains an important part of their cultural heritage.
We recommend also visiting the Bay of Taaoa, which has calm waters and views.
INSIDER TIP: On weekday mornings, stop by the Atuona Market to see all the fresh local produce and handmade crafts.

Paul Gauguin Cultural Center
The Paul Gauguin Cultural Center is one of the highlights of the island.
There is even an article in Time Magazine about Gauguin in Hiva Oa!
The painter spent his final years on Hiva Oa in his two-story thatched home, the Maison du Jouir, or “House of Bliss.” Once a stockbroker, Gauguin had abandoned his wife and five children years earlier to chase his artistic vision on the edge of the world. As he wrote in a letter, “Life has no meaning unless one lives it with a will, at least to the limit of one’s will.”
His true legacy lies in his paintings of strong, ebony-haired women and red-caped sorcerers, alongside writings that openly critique colonialism and the church.

Although many of Gauguin’s original pieces are housed elsewhere, the museum provides reproductions, letters, and artifacts that reveal his journey and connection to the Marquesas Islands.
Paul Gauguin’s grave is in the Calvary Cemetery, overlooking the bay, next to the museum.
INSIDER TIP: Entrance fees are €7 ($7.50), and guided tours are available for an additional €5 ($5.50).

Jacques Brel’s memorial
Another attraction in Atuona is the Jacques Brel Memorial, dedicated to the famous Belgian singer-songwriter who lived on Hiva Oa during the last years of his life.
Hiva Oa has become very famous due to Jacques Brel’s grave, and it has become a destination of pilgrimage for Brel fans.
TRIPADVISOR REVIEW: I recently spent 2 hours at this cemetery after walking up there following the road from CBD Atuona, since the museum is closed between 12-2 pm. Not to recover from my walk but just to take in the whole scenery and atmosphere. I did find it very spiritual.

The memorial has a small museum with photos, memorabilia, and even his restored private airplane, the Jojo, which he used to connect the Marquesas Islands.
INSIDER TIP: Combine your visit to the Jacques Brel Memorial with a stop at the nearby Calvary Cemetery, where both famous artists Brel and Gauguin are buried. Entry to the memorial is included with the Paul Gauguin Museum ticket.
Outdoor activities in Hiva Oa
Hiking trails
Hiva Oa is a hiker’s paradise, with trails that lead you through valleys, archaeological sites, and rugged peaks.
One of the most popular hikes is the trail to Tehueto Valley, where you will see waterfalls and dense tropical vegetation.
If you do not have enough of this, you can climb Mount Temetiu (1,213 meters/3,980 feet), which is quite a challenge.
Another must-visit is the Puamau Archaeological Site, where you can explore ancient tikis surrounded by nature.
The hike to the site is moderate and takes about 2 hours round trip.

Snorkeling and diving
The waters around the Bay of Hanaiapa are filled with colorful coral reefs and schools of tropical fish.
For diving, the underwater landscapes near the island’s cliffs are best. That way, you can dive into caves and arches.
Equipment rentals and excursions are available through local operators, with prices for a half-day trip starting at €100 ($110).
Horseback riding
Explore Hiva Oa’s landscapes on horseback.
Guided horseback tours take you through valleys, past ancient archaeological sites, and along trails with breathtaking views of the coastline.
This is a fantastic way to access remote areas that are difficult to reach on foot.
One of the most popular routes is the ride to Hanatekuua Beach, a pristine and secluded spot perfect for a midday picnic.
So after breakfast at Pension Kanahau (Accommodation we recommend), go for horseback riding with Paco from Hamau Ranch, one of the BEST horsemen in French Polynesia.

The best time to visit Hiva Oa
The best time to visit Hiva Oa is during the dry season, which runs from November to March.
DID YOU KNOW: This is inverted with the society islands where a European summer also coincides with summer on the Polynesian islands. On the Marquesas islands, this is not the case.
During November to March, you have sunny weather, lower humidity, and calm seas—perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, snorkeling, and exploring archaeological sites.
Temperatures are consistently warm, a daily minimum of 25–30°C (77–86°F).
The wet season (April to November, especially July) brings heavy rainfall and high humidity. Given the harsh rainy storms, we recommend you do not visit during the wet season, as French Polynesia deserves to be enjoyed as a paradise.
