Discover the LEGEND of Hotuatua Motu
An iconic site steeped in local lore, Hotuatua Motu is where the famous legend of women’s hegemony in Raivavae originated.
According to the story, in a test of strength and skill, men and women from two villages—Anatonu and Vaiuru—selected people to compete.
Each had to carry a rock down Mount Hiro and place it in the lagoon before dawn.
Confident and quick, the man took an early lead but feeling victorious, took a rest along the way.
The woman, however, moved steadily, overtook him, and reached the lagoon first, marking the victory of women on the island.
Since then, women are highly respected on Raivavae—a fascinating cultural insight that locals are sure to tell with pride.
