Before the construction of Rimatara Airport, the island could only be reached by the Tuhaapae II, a supply ship that visited every two to three weeks.

With no harbor or dock and only a very shallow lagoon-Rimatara is a circular volcanic plateau surrounded by a reef with a height of 8 to 10 m (26 to 33 ft)-passengers and goods were transferred via WHALEBOATS that docked directly on the beach at Amaru, the island’s capital.
