Welcome to AMBOSELI National Park in Kenya!
This is your COMPLETE Amboseli National Park guide, including what to expect, where to stay, best times to visit, BUDGET planning, and a 3-day itinerary.
*Laura grew up in Kenya, speaks Swahili, and has been to Amboseli six times. It’s that insider knowledge you’ll find in this article.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
🐘 Elephant capital of Kenya: Amboseli National Park is famous for its 2,000 large, free-roaming elephants and views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
💰 Expensive: With park fees of $90 per person per day and a limited number of lodges inside the park, Amboseli safaris quickly fall into the mid to upper-budget range.
🗺️ Itinerary: Thanks to its small size, 2 nights (3 days) in Amboseli is perfect, giving you time for around four game drives, Kilimanjaro views, swamp wildlife, birdwatching, a climb on Observation Hill, and even nearby cultural activities.
What is Amboseli Like?
Amboseli National Park has some of the most AMAZING LANDSCAPES IN ALL OF KENYA.
You can expect SWAMPS and dusty PLAINS as far as you can see with MOUNT KILIMANJARO in the background.
On top of that, there are over 2.000 (!) elephants in the park that cross the plains daily…

WHY? Underground streams fed by Kilimanjaro’s melting ice cap create permanent water sources that attract these large herds of elephants (Amboseli is called the LAND OF GIANT TUSKERS).
👉 INSIDER TIP: Try looking for the lonely elephant ‘GREY‘, who is more than 60 years old and the oldest elephant in the park!
There are not only elephants, but also LIONS, CHEETAHS, BUFFALO, GIRAFFES, etc.
For us, Amboseli, together with the Maasai Mara, are the two parks you MUST VISIT when you are in Kenya.
Even Lonely Planet says that “Amboseli belongs in the ELITE of Kenya’s national parks.”
However, don’t expect a huge national park; Amboseli is quite small, meaning you can cover all the different parts within 2 days of game drives.
👉 DID YOU KNOW: There are over 400 types of BIRDS spotted in Amboseli? From flamingos to eagles, hawks, and vultures, so bring your binoculars!

Is Amboseli National Park worth visiting?
Yes! Amboseli National Park is definitely worth visiting. You get to see hundreds of elephants a day, Mount Kilimanjaro in the background, over 400 different bird species, etc.
HOWEVER, we also noticed a few DISADVANTAGES to the Amboseli Game Reserve in Kenya:
- CROWDED: From June to October, Amboseli is quite crowded, especially when they have spotted lions, then you can expect 40-50 cars bunched up to get the best view.
- ONLY BIG FOUR: Amboseli does NOT have the rhinos (only lion, buffalo, elephant, and a few leopards). So don’t expect to see the big five in this national park.
- SMALL PARK: Amboseli is quite small compared to larger parks like the Masai Mara or Tsavo. Amboseli National Park covers 392 km² (151 sq miles), whereas the Masai Mara covers 1,510 km² (583 sq miles), almost FOUR TIMES LARGER than Amboseli. Tsavo is even 50 times larger than Amboseli, with its 22,000 km² (8,500+ sq miles).

- ROADS NOT PASSABLE DURING RAINY SEASON: The rainy season (April to May) makes all the roads muddy and very difficult to navigate. Since there is also a lot of water everywhere, the animals are spread out and a bit more difficult to spot.

Can you see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?
Yes, you can see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli!
Some of the best views of the mountain are actually from the KENYAN SIDE, even though Mount Kilimanjaro lies in Tanzania.
WHY? Well, Amboseli National Park lies directly across the border with Tanzania, and with wide open plains, you have clear views toward the mountain.
This is why many of the classic photos of elephants walking in front of Kilimanjaro are taken in Kenya, not Tanzania.
That said, VISIBILITY IS NOT GUARANTEED.
Kilimanjaro often HIDES BEHIND CLOUDS from around 10 am onward, so the best chances are early in the morning, shortly after sunrise!
Can you see the Big Five in Amboseli NP?
No, you can see four of the big five animals.
In Amboseli, you can see large elephant herds, lions, buffalo, and leopards.
The main exception is the rhinoceros, as there are NONE inside the Amboseli Game Reserve in Kenya. If you want to see rhinos, then your best chance is Lake Nakuru or the Maasai Mara.
👉 KEEP IN MIND: Leopard sightings are very rare, and you are not allowed to off-road in the national park. So leopards are far less commonly spotted here than in parks like the Masai Mara.
👉 INSIDER TIP: Think of Amboseli as an elephant park, rather than a classic Big Five destination. The combination of elephants, open plains, and Mount Kilimanjaro views is what makes it special for us.

Where is Amboseli National Park?
Amboseli National Park is located in SOUTHERN Kenya, right along the border with Tanzania.
Take a look at our Amboseli Kenya map below!

It sits in Kajiado County, about 230 km (143 miles) south of Nairobi.
How do I get to Amboseli?
By Road
The most common way to reach Amboseli is by road.
The drive to Amboseli National Park from Nairobi takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on traffic.
The drive from Nairobi takes you through scenic landscapes, including traditional Maasai villages and savannahs.
The ROADS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION, although the last stretch leading into the park is rough. You will need a 4×4 vehicle for this part.
We recommend booking with a local tour operator so you don’t have to worry about renting a car and driving there!
By Air

If you prefer flying, Amboseli also has a small airstrip.
There are regular charter flights from Wilson Airport (the small domestic airport) in Nairobi to Amboseli Airport, close to the park’s entrance.
The flight is short, around 40 minutes, and offers amazing AERIAL VIEWS of Mount Kilimanjaro, the snow-capped mountain, and the surrounding plains.
The PRICE is around 200 to 350 USD for a round trip.
But then you do get a mini-aerial amboseli national park safari. We saw herds of elephants from the plane, which felt surreal!

Is it possible to camp in Amboseli?
Yes, it is possible to enjoy an Amboseli camping safari.
However, there is barely any information available about camping in Amboseli?
👉 KEEP IN MIND: Despite Amboseli being one of Kenya’s most visited parks, there is currently NO CAMPSITE INSIDE THE PARK itself.
After researching, scouting, and asking around on the ground, we only found a handful of camping options, all located just outside the park boundaries.
The main camping options around Amboseli are:
-
Kimana Camp Amboseli (Kimana Community Camp): The most well-known campsite near Kimana Gate, but poorly maintained and far below usual KWS standards, with basic facilities and an overgrown campsite.
-
Olgulului Camp Amboseli: A very basic Maasai community campsite west of the park near Meshanani Gate, offering little more than space to pitch a tent, but excellent Kilimanjaro views and a quieter, more natural setting.
-
Manjaro Camp: A newer and much better-run option near Kimana Gate, with the possibility to camp or stay in simple rooms, access to proper bathrooms, firewood, optional meals, and guided walks with good wildlife sightings.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?
Because Amboseli National Park is about a 4 to 5-hour drive from Nairobi, we recommend staying AT LEAST 2 NIGHTS here.
This allows you to enjoy 4 game drives without feeling rushed after a long travel day.
With 2 nights (3 days), you have enough time for morning and afternoon game drives, with high chances of clear views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Since Amboseli is a small park, with those 4 game drives, you can cover the full 392 km² (151 sq miles) of the national park.
We DO NOT RECOMMEND staying only one night, as you’ll feel rushed and influence your safari experience.

3-Day Amboseli National Park itinerary
You can use our Amboseli National Park itinerary to shape your safari in Amboseli!
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli
Morning
After breakfast, leave Nairobi and have your driver pick you up for the long drive to Amboseli National Park.
It’s approximately 6 hours (!) by road, so leave by 7 am.
If you have the budget, you can FLY from Nairobi and then to Amboseli.
Watch Kenya’s landscapes change from the HIGHLANDS around the city to the flat PLAINS around Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Afternoon
Arrive at Amboseli National Park by mid to late afternoon.
Discuss with your driver/guide, but if time allows, you can go straight into the park for a short game drive and have your lunch inside the park.
Despite being tired from the early wake-up and the long drive, you’ll immediately see Amboseli’s elephant herds (there are more than 2.000 elephants in the park, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service).
Around this time (about 5 pm), dozens of elephants trek across the plains (so across the main roads in the park) from the dry interior towards the marshes at the foot of Kilimanjaro.
Evening
Exit the park at sunset and check in to your Amboseli accommodation, like Kibo Safari Camp (close to the entrance of Amboseli NP), where we stayed 3 nights.

Amboseli’s elephants are famous for their big size and long tusks.
Afternoon
After a lunch and a siesta (or a dip in the pool) back at the lodge, go back on a game drive around 4 pm when the harsh sun is gone.
Visit OBSERVATION HILL, a viewpoint in the park, to stretch your legs.
From the top, you get a PANORAMIC OVERLOOK of Amboseli’s wetlands and plains.

Evening
Enjoy your final night on safari in Amboseli with dinner at the lodge.
👉 INSIDER TIP: Many lodges offer an OPTIONAL NIGHT GAME DRIVE at extra cost. Since Amboseli is a national park, you cannot enter the national park, but you can discover the region around it.

Your 3-day safari in Amboseli ends with a drop-off at your hotel.

When is the best time to visit Amboseli?

The DRY SEASON (June to October) gives you the best Amboseli National Park weather for the best possible Amboseli safari experience.
Daytime temperatures sit around 25 to 28°C (77 to 82°F), with cooler nights near 15°C (59°F).
Skies are mostly blue and clear in the morning, and rain is rare.
During these months, the park’s GRASS IS SHORTER, and animals tend to gather at the few remaining waterholes, making it easier to see large herds of elephants, buffalo, and other wildlife without dense vegetation in the way.
HOWEVER, expect more visitors and higher lodge rates in this season, since it overlaps with peak Amboseli safari travel windows.

Types Of Safaris Offered in Amboseli National Park
1) Guided game drives
The guided game drive is the most popular safari experience in Amboseli.
These drives are led by your private driver, who is also a licensed guide and knows where to find the park’s elephants, lions, and other wildlife.
He is also in contact with the other drivers. So if someone spots a lion, they will notify the rest! We saw a cheetah and had it for 5 minutes to ourselves before dozens of other cars arrived!
2) Hot-Air balloon safaris
For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can book a hot-air balloon safari with Kilimanjaro Balloon Safaris.
We did this in the Masai Mara (unfortunately not in Amboseli), but it is one of the BEST SAFARI EXPERIENCES EVER!
Floating over the park at dawn gives you a bird’s-eye view of the landscape.
The PRICE is 450 USD per person, including a champagne breakfast. You can read our blog post about our hot air balloon safari in the Maasai Mara!
3) Walking safaris (At Observation Hill)
Observation Hill is the only place in the park where you can leave your car and walk around freely (they are very strict in monitoring this).
You can climb the hill on foot to have a panoramic view of Amboseli’s swamps, plains, and wildlife.
Prices for an itinerary like ours start from $360 per person per day (all-inclusive).

It is especially famous for its large elephant herds and its iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which you do not get in the Serengeti. Because of its size, Amboseli is easy to explore in just a few days and feels well managed and intimate.
