Where is Dona Ana Beach?
Praia da Dona Ana is a beautiful beach in the Algarve, famous for its golden sand, strata cliffs and turquoise waters.
Dona Ana Beach is located south of Lagos, a town in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. It’s inside the limestone cliffs of the Ponta da Piedade headland, so it’s a must visit beach!
The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean makes it perfect for family friendly activities like relaxing, swimming and local tours.
It’s easy to get to the beach, just a short walk from the centre of Lagos. Camilo Beach is nearby, so you can visit both beaches and walk the coastal paths between them.

Best time to visit Dona Ana Beach
- We find the sweet spot is in May late spring or September early autumn. You have a good balance of crowds, weather and activities. The sea is warm enough to swim and the atmosphere is more relaxed than in the peak summer months.
- In the summer (June to August) the weather is at its best, with temperatures between 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F). The beach is very crowded with many tourists, it takes away the beauty of the beach itself. Although summer is a great time to swim and sunbathe!
- In the spring (March to May) the weather is nice with temperatures between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). There are fewer tourists so it’s a quieter time to enjoy the beach and the surroundings. This is the best time to sightsee, hike and explore the city and nature without the summer heat.
Beach features and activities

1) Cliff Views and Scenic Walks
One of the key features of Dona Ana beach is the impressive rock formations, which offer a fantastic view over the sea and beach.
You have two different view options on the cliffs:
Explore the Cliff Edges East of the Main Beach: As you face the ocean from Dona Ana Beach, head to the cliffs on your left (eastward). This area is less frequented by tourists.
Tip: Follow the narrow trails that lead away from the main beach area. These paths often lead to small, rocky outcrops offering unique and private viewpoints of the beach and surrounding cliffs.
Venture to the Western Cliffs: On the western side of Dona Ana Beach, paths lead up the cliffs. This area provides more panoramic views of the coastline.
Tip: This side is slightly more challenging to access, which means fewer people venture here. The higher you go, the more expansive the view, perfect for photography or quiet reflection.

2) Water Sports and Excursions
Kayaking
Kayaking is one of the most popular activities around Dona Ana Beach. You can explore the coastline, caves and hidden beaches that are not accessible otherwise.
Guided tours start from Dona Ana or nearby beaches like Camilo Beach. Tours usually last 2-3 hours and take you through the rock formations and grottos, including Ponta da Piedade.
Tip: Morning or late afternoon tours are best.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Stand-up paddleboarding is a relaxing way to enjoy the clear waters and explore the coastline at your own pace.
Rentals and guided SUP tours are available at Dona Ana Beach. Tours often visit caves, cliffs and quiet beaches. It’s also a great workout!
Tip: Beginners should do a guided tour to learn the basics; experienced paddlers can rent a board and go on their own.

Boat Tours
Boat trips from Dona Ana Beach are a great way to see the Algarve’s sea caves, grottos and coastline.
You have various options, from small group tours on traditional fishing boats to larger catamaran cruises. These tours include Ponta da Piedade, Benagil Cave, and other scenic spots along the coast.
Tip: Choose a small boat for a more intimate experience; they can get closer to the caves and rock formations.
Snorkeling
The clear and calm waters of Dona Ana Beach are perfect for snorkeling.
You can rent snorkeling gear on the beach or join a guided snorkeling tour. The underwater rock formations, marine life, and occasional fish schools are great fun!
Tip: The best time for snorkeling is during low tide when the water is clear and visibility is better.
Scuba Diving
For those who want to dive deeper, scuba diving around Dona Ana offers underwater caves, reefs, and marine life.
There are several dive centers in Lagos that offer courses for beginners and guided dives for certified divers. The underwater caves and reefs are home to octopuses, moray eels, and various fish species.
Tip: If you’re a beginner, consider taking a Discover Scuba Diving course, it’s a taste of scuba diving without the need for full certification.

Getting to Praia da Dona Ana
Praia da Dona Ana is a 15 minutes walk from the center of Lagos.
Start by walking south towards the coast. Follow the signs to the beach. The walk is pleasant and passes through residential areas and other beaches like Praia do Pinhão.
Or you can take the tourist train, which runs regularly and connects the most popular beaches, including Praia da Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade. It’s an excellent option for visitors!
By Car
If you’re traveling around the Algarve, we recommend renting a car. It will save you a lot of time, and public transport is not always smooth sailing. Praia de Dona Ana is located at 8600-315 Lagos, Portugal.
When we travel, we always rent our car with Discover Cars. Their platform is easy to use and they offer a wide range of vehicles at competitive prices.
There is a small parking lot near the beach, but it can get full quickly, especially in the summer. If the main lot is full, you can park on the street nearby, but you may need to walk a short distance.
Tip: Arrive early in the morning to get a parking spot, especially during peak season.
By Public Transportation
Lagos has a local bus service from the town center to the beaches. You can take a bus to Praia Dona Ana or nearby Praia do Camilo. The bus stops are well-signposted, and the journey is short. Bus number 2 will give you the most options to visit the best attractions.
