Location
Montezuma Hot Springs is located in the small community of Montezuma, near Las Vegas, New Mexico. The springs lie along the Gallinas River and are next to several historical buildings.
From Las Vegas, New Mexico, it’s approximately a 6-mile or 11-minute drive to reach the Montezuma hot springs. They are also known as LAS VEGAS HOT SPRINGS. The springs are tucked away along the Gallinas Creek near the historic Montezuma Castle Resort.
The sources of the springs are located on the opposite side of Montezuma Castle, across the Gallinas River. Overall, there are THREE sources of water.
What to Expect of Montezuma Hot Springs
Below you can read our testimony from our visit to the Montezuma Hot Springs.
The drive from Las Vegas was short but beautiful as it took us through some scenic landscapes. We first went to the historic Montezuma Castle Resort, followed by our visit to the Montezuma hot springs.
Upon arrival, we found THREE pools, each filled with warm, mineral-rich water. The source of the springs lay across the river, hidden behind the grandeur of Montezuma Castle. The pools vary in size and temperature.
3 pools
The largest pool of the Montezuma hot springs was perfect for a relaxing dip, its temperature was comfortably warm. The medium-sized pool was definitely much hotter, and the smallest one was the hottest of them all—a true testament to the geothermal activity beneath the surface.
We decided to start with the LARGEST pool. As we went into the warm water, we could feel the minerals in the water working their magic. Our muscles got a massage for free! The water of all the pools is crystal clear so you can just see the bottom.
Next, we moved on to the MEDIUM-sized pool. The increased temperature was initially a little startling, but after a few moments, we found it relaxing. It was like nature’s own hot tub.
Finally, we dared to enter the SMALLEST and hottest pool. It was intense but in a good way. Our bodies only allowed us to sit in the hottest pool for a few minutes.
Where Does The Water Come From?
The water from these springs actually comes from deep underground, where it is heated by the earth’s natural geothermal energy. This heated water then rises to the surface through fractures in the rocks at the intersection where the Gallinas River crosses the Montezuma Fault.
This process gives the water its characteristic warmth, with temperatures ranging from 94°F to 120°F. As the water journeys to the surface, it collects various minerals, including lithium and sulfur, which are believed to have healing properties.
Entrance Fee and Amenities
The Montezuma hot springs are situated on private property but are open to the public FREE OF CHARGE. It’s important to respect the property and leave no trace behind!
BE WARNED: there are no restrooms, changing rooms, or other facilities at the Montezuma hot springs themselves, so visitors should come prepared. It’s recommended to bring water for hydration, towels, and possibly a change of clothes.
While the lack of amenities might be a downside for some, we found it much better as it gives you a feeling of the natural character of the whole scene and you should not expect many visitors!
Parking
There is parking available on the side of the road, free of charge!
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit depends on what you want to get out of your visit.
Do you prefer solitude or do you like to chat with people? Maybe you want the water to have the optimal temperature? Thus, there are 3 options:
- For solitude: If you want a quieter, more private experience, try visiting early in the morning or during weekdays. These times tend to be less crowded.
- For socializing: If you enjoy meeting new people and don’t mind a crowd, weekends and late afternoons can be busier and more sociable.
- For optimal temperature comfort: Remember, these are Montezuma hot springs. If you’re concerned about being too hot, cooler parts of the day such as early mornings or evenings might be more comfortable for you.
Where To Stay Near Montezuma Hot Springs
Luxury
For a more luxurious stay, you might consider the “Best Western Plus Montezuma Inn & Suites“. It’s near the State Bird Refuge and Santa Fe Trail, and offers pet-friendly accommodations and free breakfast.
Mid-Budget
“Holiday Inn Express & Suites Las Vegas” is a great mid-budget option. This hotel offers comfortable lodgings without breaking the bank.
Budget
For those on a budget, consider “Super 8 by Wyndham Las Vegas” or “Budget Inn“. These accommodations offer basic amenities for a reasonable price.
Restaurants

- Borracho’s Craft Booze and Brews – If you’re into craft beers and spirits, this place is a must-visit. They offer a wide selection of beverages and their average price per person is $15.
- Charlie’s Bakery and Cafe – This place has received positive reviews for its breakfast & brunch selections, bakeries, and Mexican food.
- Olivias Café – Just 0.7 miles away from the Montezuma hot springs, this café and Mexican restaurant opens early at 6:00 AM, perfect for a hearty breakfast before heading to the hot springs.

There are several interesting places to visit in the vicinity of Montezuma Hot Spring, national parks, hotels with special architecture, and even a wildlife refuge area.
- Pecos National Historical Park: Just a short drive away, this park is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. Open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, this park offers hiking trails, historical ruins, and beautiful landscapes.

Final Tips and Tricks
1.Start from the Bottom and Work Your Way Up
The hot springs have a variety of pools, each with different temperatures. Start with the lower pools and gradually move up to the hotter ones. This way, your body can acclimatize to the heat.
2. Dress Appropriately
While the Montezuma hot springs are a place to unwind, remember that clothing is required. So, make sure to pack a swimsuit. It’s also a good idea to bring along a towel, flip-flops, and a change of clothes.
3. Stay Hydrated
If you plan on staying for a while, you may also want to bring a water bottle and some snacks. The nearest town, Montezuma, is a bit of a trek away, so it’s best to come prepared. Take a look at which must-have travel accessories you need for a destination like this.
4. Practice Good Montezuma Hot Spring Etiquette
Respect the space and other visitors. Keep noise levels down, don’t use soaps or oils in the water, and make sure to clean up after yourself.
5. Don’t Drink the Water
Though it might be tempting, don’t drink the water from the Montezuma hot springs. The mineral content, while beneficial for soaking, is not suitable for consumption.
6. Visit at the Right Time
The Montezuma hot springs are open from dawn to dusk and are free of charge. Visiting early in the morning or later in the evening might help you avoid crowds.
