How do I get to Nyang Nyang Beach?
The question on your mind is probably, ‘How the heck do you get to the beach’? We’ve got you covered.
To get to the beach in Bali, follow these steps:
- Transportation to the Pecatu area: The first step is to arrange transportation to the Pecatu area on the southern coast of Bali. We recommend RENTING A SCOOTER rather than using Grab or Gojek as in Bali, sharing a ride is prohibited in some places. They are allowed to drop you off, but they have to leave immediately and are not allowed to pick you up again.
Traveling from the central Uluwatu region to Nyang Nyang Beach typically requires a 10-minute drive. If you come from the Seminyak or Legian areas, the drive is around an hour. The trip from Ubud to Nyang Nyang Beach is generally about 2 hours long.
- Parking Area: The journey to Nyang Nyang Beach begins at its parking area, which is relatively easy to find with a GPS or map application. The parking area is situated atop the cliff that overlooks the beach, providing a stunning panoramic view of the ocean.
- Trekking Down: From the parking lot, you have to follow a steep and narrow path to reach the beach. . The trail can be challenging, but it is actually quite manageable for most people with average fitness levels. It’s important to wear comfortable and sturdy footwear to navigate the uneven and sometimes slippery path safely.
- Duration: The path down to the beach from the parking lot typically takes about 30 minutes, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the breathtaking views.
- Preparation: We advise you to bring along water, sun protection, and perhaps some snacks, as there are limited facilities available at the beach itself. The secluded nature of Nyang Nyang means that amenities are minimal, so it’s best to come prepared, especially if you plan to spend several hours enjoying the beach.
Nyang Nyang Beach vs Nunggalan Beach (SECRET)
What NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW is that Nyang Nyang Beach and Nunggalan Beach are neighboring beaches (not the same beach), even though they are linked by a 2-kilometer stretch of golden sand.
West Entrance (Nyang Nyang Beach Uluwatu):
To access the western part of Nyang Nyang Beach (as described above), you’ll need to find the two light stone pillars and a blue Nyang Nyang Beach street sign near the luxurious Alila Villas Uluwatu resort. Park your vehicle near the resort and look for the signboard that says “Nyang Nyang Surfing Beach.” Follow the path, which will take you through a forest before descending to the beach. The western part of the beach is known for its SHIPWRECKS AND WHITE SANDS.
INSIDER TIP: This entrance is the most developed one compared to the other two. You can even ride your scooter down to the beach (but be warned, the last part is quite steep). At the top, there are many warungs for Indonesian and Western food. If you arrive by car, you have to park at the top.
East Entrance (Nunggalan Beach Bali):
To access Nunggalan Beach, you need to park near the Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple. From there, look for signs that lead to the “Nunggalan Beach” pathway. The trek down to Nunggalan Beach takes around 20–30 minutes. BE WARNED: There are around 500 (!) STEPS down to the Uluwatu beach. Some parts have a railing to hold onto, and some parts do without. Luckily, most of the steps are in the shade.
Nyang Nyang Beach Uluwatu Entrance Fee
At the official entrance to Nyang Nyang Beach, the entrance fee operates on a donation system. A common contribution is around 5,000 IDR for each scooter or car.
You’ll find the ticket booth located at the entry point to the parking and warung area, situated atop the Nyang Nyang Cliff. Locals may approach your scooter to collect the donation. Even though the donation is not obligatory, we advise you to just pay the 5,000 IDR.
What to expect from Nyang Nyang Beach Bali?
The Beach Experience
Once you reach Nyang Nyang Beach, you’ll find a long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise water, backed by dramatic cliffs. The beach’s remote location helps preserve its natural state, making it a great spot for those who want to relax or take photos without the crowds.
Facilities
Only a few years ago, there were no warungs or anything at Nyang Nyang. A few locals carried large coolers with drinks down the steep gravel road to the beach every day. Now, there are a few small warungs where you can buy snacks and drinks, rent sun loungers and umbrellas, etc. The locals also happily carry the umbrellas down on the sand for you if you want. Even so, we still recommend bringing your own essentials, including food, water, sunscreen, and a beach towel.
Surfing
Nyang Nyang Beach offers surfing opportunities for experienced surfers. The surf breaks here are known for their challenge due to the strong currents and presence of sharp reefs, making them less perfect for beginners.
SAFETY TIP: Nyang Nyang Beach is not the ideal spot for swimming due to the reef that extends up to the sand at mid- to low tide. The beach is also known for its strong currents and waves, which can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers. The eastern side of the beach has more swim-friendly spots without the reef.
Shipwrecks
Nyang Nyang Beach is famous for the presence of two abandoned shipwrecks on the shore. These have become informal art installations, offering unique Instagrammable photo opportunities.

Surfing at Pantai Nyang Nyang
As already covered, the surf breaks at the beach are known for their CHALLENGING conditions, including strong currents and the presence of sharp reefs. Due to these conditions, Nyang Nyang is not recommended for beginners.

The best time to visit Nyang Nyang Beach during the day is early in the MORNING OR LATE AFTERNOON. Arriving early in the morning, around 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., allows you to enjoy the cooler temperatures, calmer waters, and potentially fewer visitors.
Late in the afternoon, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., also offers cooler temperatures and a chance to witness a beautiful sunset.
