Driving the car in the container

On 1 September 2026, our Land Rover Defender 110 left Hamburg inside a sealed 40-foot high-cube container aboard the Maersk La Paz, bound for Montevideo.

The container was $4,060 / €3,500 (split by two), and we picked a company most overlanders have never heard of: Overlander Shipping from Hamburg.

This is the guide we wanted before we booked.

This is a practical vehicle shipping guide for Europeans shipping their vehicle overseas for the first time.

We outline what we paid, signed, and what actually happened on loading day as well as during pick-up in Montevideo, because knowing the real process in advance, is what actually makes shipping your own vehicle for the first time manageable.

KEYTAKEAWAYS

💰 Total cost: $3,534 (€3,048). That is $2,030 (€1,750) ocean freight, $186 (€160) marine insurance, $218 (€190) Mercosur third-party insurance, and $1,100 (€948) customs clearance paid in cash in Montevideo.

📦 Share the container: A 40-foot high-cube to yourself costs $4,060 (€3,500). Split with one other vehicle it is $2,030 (€1,750) each. Same box, same ship (rates depend on route and period).

⏱️ Timing: 28 to 32 days at sea, weekly departures. Hand the car over 5 to 7 working days before sailing. Collect it 2 to 3 working days after arrival.

⛽ The rule that carries fines: fuel tank in the red reserve zone (they check this). Gas bottles empty and labelled. No aerosols, no laptops, no cameras left inside.

🇺🇾 On arrival: Uruguay issues a temporary import permit valid for 12 months (you need to make a booking with Imigracion office).

What it costs to ship a car from Hamburg to Uruguay

The number that matters is not just the freight quote, even though it is a huge part of the cost.

That’s why we recommend shared container shipping, meaning that two vehicle owners split one 40ft high-cube: your cars travel side by side in the same sealed box, and you each pay half the freight instead of paying for the whole container yourself.

Even if you decide to take the 20ft container for yourself, the costs are higher than sharing a 40ft container.

What actually decides your budget is the freight quote plus $1,100 (€948) in cash that many people overlook.

That figure is not a single administrative fee; it covers your customs agent’s charge for clearing the container through Uruguayan customs, the paperwork and stamps needed to issue your temporary import permit, and the port handling costs that release your vehicle from the terminal.

KEEP IN MIND: Ricardo from Overlander Shipping told us this amount changes depending on the port. In other ports, there might be extra checks that cost money as well.

WhatCostWhen you pay
Ocean freight, shared 40ft high-cube$2,030 (€1,750)You make a 1.000 euro downpayment + the rest when the boat has left. Only when you have paid the total amount, will you receive the bill of lading of the container (detailed receipt for the specific shipping containers and goods loaded on board, listing individual container numbers, weights, and cargo descriptions.)
Marine transport insurance$186 (€160)Optional, quoted separately and amount depends on the value of your vehicle
Montevideo customs clearance and local charges$1,100 (€948)Cash, on arrival in Uruguay
Mercosur third-party motor insurance (the regional insurance required to legally drive in Uruguay and neighbouring countries)$160 (€140)/year + $58 (€50) feeBefore your car arrives in Uruguay. IMPORTANT: You need insurance to get your TIP, and without TIP, there is no releasing of the car from the port
Total$3,534 (€3,048)

This price covers everything in Hamburg: local costs, load securing, container stuffing and lashing, and the export declaration.

👉 INSIDER TIP: Bring the Montevideo money as US dollars in cash! This was a tip Ricardo from Overlander Shipping gave us. It’s easier to pay your agent cash so he can take car of the whole administrative process in Montevideo.

RoRo or container: how to choose the best shipping option?

Car in the container

There are two ways for vehicle shipping overseas.

Container shipping, where you put your vehicle in a steel box that is sealed in front of you (important) and opened in front of you.

RoRo shipping, where someone drives your vehicle onto a ship’s deck, where it sits accessible for a month.

Let’s have a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of shipping through a container or RoRo from Hamburg to South America!

FactorContainerRoRo
SecuritySAFE! Sealed container, no access between Hamburg and MontevideoVehicle sits exposed on the ship for the whole voyage. Some thefts happen with RoRo on a South America route but not with containers. Of course, plenty of travellers ship RoRo with nothing missing.

How to ship a car from Hamburg to Uruguay, step by step

Closing of the container
Closing of the container

Eight steps, from first email to sealed container.

This is the whole process of shipping a car from Hamburg to Uruguay, in order.

1. Get quotes six months out

With that much lead time, Overlander Shipping should be able to find you a container partner.

Shorter notice works too; it is just less certain.

2. Measure the vehicle properly

Length, width, height with everything mounted, weight, cubic volume.

Your quote is calculated on the numbers you supply, and any deviation the port authority spots is charged back to you.

Measure the roof rack and awning, not the roofline.

This is also where the container type matters.

A standard 40ft container has a door opening of about 2.28m (7’6″), since the box itself is only around 2.39m (7’10”) tall inside.

A 40ft high-cube is roughly 30cm (1ft) taller throughout, with a door opening of about 2.58m (8’6″). The door height is what actually decides whether your vehicle gets in, not the internal ceiling further back, because you drive it in nose-first through that opening.

A bare vehicle under about 2.3m can usually squeeze into a standard container, but the moment you add a roof rack, rooftop tent or awning box, you’re almost always into high-cube territory (this was the case for us).

3. Book

All they need to get started is a copy of the owner’s passport and the vehicle registration.

Further down the line, you will also need proof of Mercosur insurance before your car arrives in Uruguay, and you receive the Bill of Lading once freight is paid in full; that is the complete document list for a container shipment like ours.

4. Pay the deposit

$1,160 (€1,000) per owner once a partner is found, credited against your freight.

It is non-refundable, but it is there to protect you: if your buddy pulls out late, their deposit guarantees your rate at no extra cost.

5. Send your inventory list

Send your inventory list by email before departure, for the insurance.

Not garment by garment, just the significant items. This is what a claim would be judged against.

6. Prepare the vehicle

Now it’s time to prep your vehicle to the checklist.

Do this at home, not in the port.

👉 INSIDER TIP: Throw a few moisture absorbers in the cab and near electrics and any lockers before it goes into the container. A sealed box sitting for weeks at sea heading into South America’s humidity is exactly the environment where condensation builds up and mould starts on seats, carpets and stored gear.

7. Hand the car over

Overlander Shipping recommends handing your car over 5 to 7 working days before sailing.

Departures are weekly.

The seal that closes the container.
The seal that closes the container and cannot be opened without customs present.

8. Check your Bill of Lading, then track.

The Bill of Lading is the contract, the receipt, and the document Uruguayan customs matches against your car.

Check three things the moment you receive it: your name and vehicle details are spelled correctly, the container number matches the one physically on your container, and the port of discharge says Montevideo. A mistake in any of these can delay customs clearance on the other end.

Then follow the container by its code, and the ship itself once it sails.

👉 INSIDER TIP: Check the make, model, and VIN on every document against your registration.

What you can and cannot ship to South America in a container

Overlander Shipping sends a written checklist of what may stay in the vehicle.

Here is the honest part: nobody checked our contents inside the car on the day of loading. Not the shipping company, not German customs.

But keep in mind, this does not mean you should carry medicines with you as the Uruguayan customs may well inspect your vehicle on arrival, and the fines land on you.

IMPORTANT:

  • Fuel tank must be nearly empty, needle in the red reserve area (this was checked and a picture was taken as proof). High fines will be imposed if you do not do this!
  • Gas bottles empty and labelled. Canisters rinsed, aired for days, labelled, with an unscrewable lid. Batteries disconnected after loading.

KEEP IN MIND: Valuables are not insured, so cash, jewellery, laptops, phones, drones and cameras fly with you.

Loading day in Hamburg

We called Ricardo, who opened the barrier to their property, and it was immediately clear where to go.

The Overlander Shipping representative met us in a hi-vis vest and walked us through the procedure before anything started.

First, the exterior is documented. Photographs of every side, then a written record of every item fixed to the car.

On an expedition vehicle, this takes a while: every jerry can holder, the spare wheel, LED bar…. That list is what protects you if something is missing at the other end, so check it before you sign.

Then you get the document confirming they have taken possession of the vehicle for shipment to Uruguay.

The container was opened and both cars driven in.

Port workers strapped them down, wedged wooden blocks in front of and behind every tyre, and pinned those blocks into the container floor. It was more thorough than we expected.

Last, you disconnect the starter battery yourself while they photograph the result.

We will not pretend we were not nervous watching those doors close. The Defender is not just a vehicle, it is the home we spent two years building, and for the next month we had no choice but to trust the process and trust Overlander Shipping completely.

Then the doors close, a numbered pin seal goes on, and the container cannot be opened again until customs clears it in Montevideo. That is the moment the trip becomes real.

👉 INSIDER TIP: Photograph the seal number yourself, close up, before you leave. It is the one number that proves the container was not opened in transit.

What happens on arrival in Montevideo

This will be updated when we have collected our car.

What we wish we’d known before shipping

A few things nobody tells you upfront that would have saved us some scrambling:

  • Bring your Montevideo money in US dollars, cash. Cards and euros will not help you there.
  • The freight quote is not the total. Budget for the $1,100 (€948) in cash on top of it before you get surprised at the port.
  • The €1,000 deposit is non-refundable once you pay it, but it exists to protect your rate if your container buddy pulls out late, so do not skip it to save money.
  • Measure your roof rack and awning, not your roofline, when you send your dimensions.
  • The quote is calculated on what you tell them, and for any mismatch, the port spots get charged back to you.
  • Pack a few moisture absorbers before the doors close. A sealed box crossing into South America’s humidity is exactly where condensation and mould start on seats and gear.
  • Photograph your own seal number before you leave the port. It is the one proof the container was not opened in transit.

Should you use Overlander Shipping?

Overlander shipping

Definitely!

We would use Overlander Shipping again if we were shipping another vehicle from Europe to South America (or North America, for that matter), for three reasons:

  • They sourced our shipping partner directly, pulling from their own network instead of leaving us to dig through Facebook groups for a trustworthy option.
  • Cancellation stayed free and in writing all the way up to delivery, so we had zero financial risk while we finalized our plans.
  • Ricardo talked us through the entire process on a free call before we paid a cent, so we knew exactly what to expect before committing.

Who it’s suited to: first-time European overlanders shipping their vehicle internationally who want someone experienced handling the whole shipping process.

What we liked: the free 45-minute Zoom call before committing to anything, free rebooking and cancellation in writing with no reason required, and Ricardo meeting us in person at the port on loading day.

What we didn’t: it’s one office and a handful of people, not a 24-hour service desk. If something goes wrong outside office hours, there is no institutional backup the way there would be with a large international broker.

FAQ

How much does it cost to ship a car from Hamburg to Uruguay?

$3,534 (€3,048) all in for us: $2,030 (€1,750) freight sharing a container, $186 (€160) marine insurance, $218 (€190) Mercosur insurance, and $1,100 (€948) in Montevideo.

How long does it take?

28 to 32 days at sea, weekly departures. Ours left 1 September and arrives 1 October. Add a week before and a few days after. Realistically 6 weeks door to driving.

What is the best company to ship a car to South America?

For our shipment, Overlander Shipping was the right choice: they found our container partner, offered free cancellation, and Ricardo talked us through everything before we paid anything. See “Should you use Overlander Shipping?” above for who we would recommend them to, and the one real drawback of going with a small operation.

Do you have to be there when it is loaded?

Yes we recommend to be there, on both ends, for container shipping. You drive the car in, disconnect the battery, and stay until the seal is fitted. It’s possible you leave your car in the hands of Overlander Shipping and they will drive it onto the container, but check with them first.

Can you track the container?

Yes, by container code, and by the ship itself once it sails. You can use VesselFinder to track the ship.
