Our experience using the WOLFBOX G900 TriPro

We’re currently building our overlanding vehicle to drive around the world, starting with the Pan-American Highway all the way from Canada. Because of that, we’ve been trying to choose gear we can genuinely rely on long-term instead of constantly replacing cheap equipment on the road.

One of the biggest things we wanted from a mirror dash cam was something we could INSTALL ONCE and forget about. We didn’t want laggy menus, unreliable recording, or footage that’s difficult to access later when you actually need it.

Overall, the installation process for the WOLFBOX G900 TriPro went surprisingly smoothly.

The biggest challenge was figuring out the best PLACEMENT for the rear camera. After testing a few positions, we ended up mounting it near the TOP OF THE CAR to give us the widest and clearest possible rear view, especially with overlanding gear loaded in the back (even with a big basket for our propane bottle).

We only needed to drill a single hole for the cable routing, and we used the included heavy-duty adhesive for the rear backup camera, which has held up properly so far, even through rain and highway driving.

One thing we unfortunately couldn’t fully install was the reversing assist cable.

The system includes REVERSING GUIDE LINES that automatically appear when shifting into reverse, which would be genuinely useful for larger vehicles.

The issue wasn’t cable length, as the red trigger cable was long enough, but because we installed a secondary diesel tank in our build, we simply couldn’t physically access the reverse light wiring to connect the power source.

That said, the rear-view mirror dash cam view itself still works perfectly fine while driving, and honestly, the upgraded rear visibility became one of our favorite parts of the entire system.

We’re also still figuring out the fastest workflow for saving important footage clips when something dangerous happens on the road.

Since we’ll be driving internationally for long periods, we expect to capture more close calls or unusual driving situations that we’ll want to easily locate later.

The biggest difference vs regular dash cams

Most dash cams are quite passive.

You install them, forget about them, and only check footage after something happens.

Daytime recording

The 4K front camera is genuinely really impressive.

License plates are readable at traffic lights and even while moving at okay speeds.

Colors look quite natural instead, and dynamic range is much better than expected.

The rear camera also performs well, especially considering it records in 2.5K.

We noticed, compared to our previous dash cam, that the rear feed remained very usable during bright sunlight.

Night recording

This is where the STARVIS 2 sensor makes a difference.

Street signs remain visible, headlights don’t completely blow out the image, and nighttime detail stays surprisingly clean.

Compared to older mirror dash cams, the difference at night is massive.

The mirror display is better than expected

We originally assumed the mirror display would feel gimmicky.

It doesn’t.

After about two days, we actually preferred it over a traditional rearview mirror.

The visibility is wider, clearer, and unaffected by passengers, luggage, or dark tint.

This is the STRONGEST REASON we bought a Wolfbox mirror dash cam instead of a regular dash cam setup.

App experience

The WOLFBOX app works better than expected.

Footage transfers quickly thanks to 5GHz WiFi support, and changing settings from your phone is much easier than using the touchscreen alone.

GPS playback and route tracking also worked very well during our testing.

What could be better

Weight of the dash cam

The mirror dash cam itself has a bit of weight to it.

On our overlanding car, the extra forward weight caused the mirror to tilt downward.

We were able to fix it with some strips, but it’s not a lightweight dash cam.

Premium pricing

It costs quite a bit more than standard dash cams, but you are getting more functionality.

You don’t want to pay 100 EUR and then regret it when it does not work when you need it in an emergency.
