Terrafirma Defender Rear Window Guard REVIEW: Best Molle Panel?

When you are preparing a Defender for overland travel around the world, security becomes part of the build whether you want it to or not.

No matter how careful we are on our expedition, there will always be moments where the vehicle is parked somewhere unfamiliar:

• campsites
• cities
• border crossings
• ferry terminals
• trailheads
• grocery stops

And because the Defender already has exposed side and rear windows, we wanted a bit more protection before starting our world trip.

That is why we installed the Terrafirma Defender Rear Window Guard on our build.

For us, this 3-piece window guard set upgrade was mainly about security.

One of our side windows has already been replaced by a Front Runner gullwing window, while the other side carries two mounted jerrycans. That meant that the side windows of the car are ‘relatively safe’. But this was not the case for the main rear window.

So when we found that a Defender Rear Window Guard exists, it fit perfectly in our plans and gave us exactly what we wanted:

• and a practical molle mounting surface inside the Defender

This is a smaller upgrade on our expedition car compared to our HALO lights, steering wheel, LED light bar, front carpet set, rear view camera dash cam…

Why we installed a Defender rear window guard

The longer we prepare this Defender for our world expedition, the more we see that practical upgrades matter as much as exciting ones.

Security is one of those things you hope you never need, but once you start traveling through unfamiliar places around the world, it becomes harder to ignore. We would really like not to get robbed during our expedition, so we needed a security solution.

The Defender attracts attention almost everywhere it goes. This is especially true when it carries overland gear.

So adding window guards felt like a smart layer of protection without drastically changing the vehicle itself.

We liked the Terrafirma guards, not only because they provide some rear window protection, but also because they provide useful molle mounting space inside the rear of the vehicle.

We will mainly use the window barrier for:

• our first aid kit
• toiletries
• smaller pouches
• lightweight gear we want easy access to

Installation of the rear window guard

The installation of the Defender Rear Window Guard itself was very straightforward.

We predrilled a small 2mm hole first, then simply used the screws included in the box to mount the rear window guard with its powder coat securely.

Everything lined up properly and the final result feels strong once tightened down.

The only limitation for us was the side sections of the kit.

One side interferes with our water inlet system, while the other side rests against the helper strut from our Alu-Cab setup. So for our specific overland build, only the main rear panel worked properly.

That said, the main rear molle panel still worked perfectly and honestly gives us the functionality we wanted most anyway.

Is the Terrafirma window guard worth it?

For us, this is definitely true.

This is one of those upgrades that makes the Defender feel more prepared for real overland travel.

The quality of the Defender Rear Window Guard feels good. Installing it was easy. The added security gives extra peace of mind when traveling long-term through unfamiliar places.

The molle panel helps organize small essentials inside the vehicle. It gives quick access to these items.

If you build a Defender for overlanding, remote travel, or long trips, a Defender Rear Window Guard makes total sense. It is practical and useful.
