If you want a small Lake Garda town with cliffside views, lemon houses and one of the most unusual cycle paths in Italy, Limone sul Garda is the place to go.
We’d stay two or three nights, but we wouldn’t spend every day only in town.
In this guide, we are taking you through all the best activities.

For us, the best way to experience Limone is to spend one day in town, one day on the lake or mountains, and one day exploring somewhere else around Lake Garda.
In this guide, we’ll show you what we think is genuinely worth your time, which activities we’d book, where we’d stay and how we’d plan three days here.

Is Limone sul Garda worth visiting?
Yes, but we find that Limone works best for two or three nights rather than a full week.
The town itself is small enough to explore in an afternoon, but what makes it a good base is the combination of the lake, the cycle path, hiking, and easy day trips.
We would come for the vibes and views, then use at least one day to get out of town by ferry or on the water.
Peak summer is the main downside. The narrow lanes feel packed in July and August, so we much prefer Limone when the weather is quite okay (like in June and September) but the crowds are lighter.
Stay here if you want a small, scenic lakeside base, easy ferry access to prettier day trips, and lemon-grove charm.
Skip it, or just day-trip in, if you want nightlife or a wide range of beaches.
🍋 DID YOU KNOW: Limone is famous in medical science, not just tourism. In 1974, doctors traced a rare protective protein, Apolipoprotein A-1 Milano (ApoA-1 Milano), to families in Limone. Carriers can have very high blood fats yet almost no cardiovascular disease, and the mutation was traced back to a single local couple who married here in 1644. Combined with the Mediterranean diet and mild climate, it is part of why the town has an unusual number of residents living past 100.
Our verdict: stay here if you want a compact, beautiful northern-Lake Garda base and don’t mind using ferries or day trips to add variety.
How many days do you need in Limone sul Garda?
Three days is our sweet spot.
With one day, explore the historic centre, visit the Limonaia, and walk the suspended cycle path.
With two days, add a water activity (boat tour, beach day…) or Sentiero del Sole for hiking.
With three days, use the ferry to visit Malcesine and Monte Baldo.
If you are staying four or five nights, that is when we would start considering bigger excursions such as Verona or even the Dolomites rather than trying to find more things to do inside Limone itself.

Top things to do in Limone sul Garda
Limone is small, so you can cover the highlights in a day.
Here is a quick overview of what is worth your time.
🏖️ Relax on the beach
Limone’s beaches are small, and there are more pebbly coves rather than long sandy stretches, with clean, cool water that earns Legambiente and European EMAS environmental flags, so perfect for swimming!
We would use the beaches as a break between sightseeing rather than make them the main reason to stay in Limone.
Cola Beach is the easiest option if you want a quick swim without leaving town.
🚲 Walk, run, or cycle the suspended cycle path
The Ciclopista del Garda, also called the Garda cycle path, is the town’s highlight: a cycle-pedestrian path bolted to the cliffs, hanging about 50 metres above the water, with 2.5 km of its length running directly over the lake.
It is free to walk, and if you only want the famous cliffside section, walking is completely enough.
But there are three good ways to experience it depending on what you want.
Option 1: Walk it for free
Best if you want the views and photos without committing half a day.
Option 2: Rent a bike independently
Best if you want more freedom and want to continue farther along the lake.
Ride the lake, not just look at it
Rent an e-bike and cover the path plus the shore beyond town.

The new guided tour is much more than simply hiring a bike.
It lasts around three hours, uses e-bikes, includes the suspended cycle path and explores Limone itself. On weekdays it also includes an olive-oil mill visit and tasting; on weekends the itinerary can include the Limonaia del Castèl instead.
We would choose this if you want to see more than the famous path and understand what you are riding past rather than doing the route completely independently.

This guided 3-hour e-bike tour combines the suspended path with Limone’s old streets and local food culture, so we’d choose it if you want the ride to feel like a full activity rather than just a bike rental.
🍸 Enjoy an aperitivo
The evening ritual here is an Aperol spritz by the water.
Grab a lakeside table, order an Aperol or a local lemon spritz, and watch the ferries come in.
We recommend Il Cortiletto; they have more than 50 variations of spritzers, and they were the best we ever tasted!
🍋 Limonaia del Castèl: a journey through citrus history
Limonaia del Castèl is a restored 18th-century lemon house, built by the Amadei family.
It’s the best place to understand why the town is called Limone.
You walk the terraced greenhouses, learn how the pillars and beams sheltered citrus through Alpine winters, and get sweeping lake views.
The entry is €2; you can book your visit via the official website of Limonaia del Castel.
KEEP IN MIND: we recommend their homemade limoncello. Absolutely amazing and perfect to tuck away in a big luggage bag.
🏛️ The Tourism Museum (Museo del Turismo)
A small, free museum telling the story of how Limone went from an isolated fishing and lemon village to a tourist town once the lakeside road arrived.
The historical photos are the highlight.
There is free entry; it’s a nice 10-minute stop on the way.
We would only make a stop if you are interested in the town’s history. Otherwise, it’s a quick, free 10-minute stop while passing.

⛪ Historic churches and the Centro Storico
Limone’s old town is small enough to explore without a plan, and honestly, that is part of the fun.
We would wander around Porto Vecchio first, then climb through the narrow lanes toward San Rocco and San Benedetto and visit the green Parco Villa Boghi.
If you only want pretty streets and a coffee, you do not need a guide.
But if you want to understand the churches, citrus-growing history and how Limone developed around the old harbour, there is now a two-hour private guided walking tour that covers Porto Vecchio, San Rocco, San Benedetto and the old-town fountain.

If you want something more active than walking around town, Sentiero del Sole is the route we would look at first.
The important thing is that this is not just another lakeside stroll.
You are climbing above Limone, so the payoff is wider views across northern Lake Garda rather than simply seeing the same waterfront from another angle.
The cliffs behind Limone Sul Garda, part of the Alto Garda Bresciano Park, open onto proper trails with big lake views.
You can also do a detour to the Fonte Torrente San Giovanni spring.

Check the distance, elevation and recent trail conditions before leaving Limone so you know whether the route fits your fitness level and the weather.

The northern end of Lake Garda is famous for its wind, so sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking are all easy to arrange with many shops and schools available.
We’d choose the activity based on what kind of day you want:
- Kayak or SUP: best if you want something active and inexpensive.
- Sailing or windsurfing: best if wind sports are actually part of the reason you came north.
- Boat trip: best if you mainly want the scenery without doing the work yourself.
We recommend Wind Riders and Planet All Sports as sailing and kitesurfing schools.
KEEP IN MIND: The wind is the strongest at the northern end near Riva.

The Strada della Forra is a cool road carved straight through a gorge in the cliffs above town, once called one of the world’s most beautiful roads.
It appeared in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace and in The Sopranos, and you can drive it, e-bike it, or walk up from the old town.
The road is spectacular, but we would not make it a priority unless you already have a car or enjoy scenic drives.
If you only have three days in Limone, we would choose Malcesine or a boat/hike before spending a large part of the day on this.
PAY ATTENTION: The road is now one-way due to construction works until the end of September 2026.

Day trips from Limone sul Garda
If you only have time for one day trip, we would choose Malcesine.
The others make more sense depending on how long you are staying and whether you have a car.
Our order is:
- Malcesine + Monte Baldo: easiest and our favourite
- Riva del Garda: best for another northern-lake town
- Verona: best full city day
- Dolomites: best big excursion if you are staying longer
- Sirmione: beautiful but far and very busy
- Gardone Riviera: best if already driving south
⛴ Ferry to Malcesine (and the Monte Baldo cable car)
If you only take one ferry day trip from Limone, this is the one we would do. Malcesine is a guinenly beautiful town.
From there, the Monte Baldo cable car climbs to over 1,700 metres for huge views.
The ferry takes about 10 to 28 minutes, around €3.50 one way.
The cable car is more expensive and costs 30 euros round trip.
When you arrive at Monte Baldo, you can go on walks/hikes of varying difficulties, enjoy the views, or try some of the traditional local cuisine in the restaurants at the top.
All of these options are conveniently located near the station.
Skip the cable-car queue in Malcesine
Book the Monte Baldo cable car ahead so your ferry day trip actually gets up the mountain.

We would choose Riva over Malcesine only if you want a larger, livelier town or plan to combine it with hiking around the northern end of the lake.
Just above it, the turquoise Lago di Tenno and the medieval hamlet of Canale di Tenno make a magical add-on.
Take a day trip to Verona
If you are staying in Limone for four or five nights and want one day that feels completely different from Lake Garda, Verona is the city trip we would consider.
The guided day tour you found runs for around eight hours and includes transport from the Lake Garda area, a guided walk and major sights including Piazza dei Signori, Juliet’s balcony and the Roman Arena area. Admissions and meals are not included.
We would not squeeze this into a three-day Limone itinerary.
But if you have extra time and don’t want to organise trains, buses and parking yourself, the transport-included tour is much easier.
🏛️ Want one full city day?
Choose Verona if you want a complete break from lake towns. This full-day option includes transport and a guided city tour, so you don’t have to piece the journey together yourself.

This is not something we would recommend for a normal three-day Limone stay.
But if you are staying longer around Lake Garda and want one big mountain day without driving yourself, the Dolomites are a completely different experience.
The full-day coach tour lasts 10 to 12 hours and includes stops around Lake Soraga, Pordoi Pass and Ortisei, with an optional cable-car opportunity at Pordoi Pass.
We’d choose this if:
- you have at least four or five nights around Lake Garda;
- you want mountain scenery more than another lake town;
- you don’t want to deal with mountain driving.
We would skip it if you only have two or three days in Limone.
🏔️ Staying longer and want one big day out?
This 10 to 12 hour Dolomites trip is the option we’d consider if you want dramatic mountain scenery without driving the high passes yourself.

The famous southern peninsula, home to the Scaligero Castle and the Roman ruins of the Grotte di Catullo.
We wouldn’t do Sirmione as a quick half-day from Limone.
It is too far south and deserves more time, especially once crowds and transport are factored in.
Gardone Riviera and Verona
Gardone Riviera has the extravagant Vittoriale degli Italiani estate and is also home to Lido 84 (more on that below).
Verona, your likely gateway, is worth a day for the Roman Arena if you have time.
Where to eat in Limone sul Garda
The meal we still associate most with Limone is the lemon pasta.
This is the kind of destination where we would enjoy the local citrus theme at least once instead of ordering the same pizza or pasta you can get anywhere around the lake.
Ristorante Alla Noce: a hotel restaurant famous for panoramic views and plates like lemon pasta, gnocchi and shrimp maccheroni.
Il Cortiletto: a garden spritz bar with more than 50 spritz variations. Great for drinks. Think of it as an aperitivo stop more than a full dinner.
Scaloni 20 Bruschetteria: a tiny, charming bruschetta spot on Via Castello with cushioned staircase seating and homemade lemonade. But they have a very limited menu.
The perfect Limone sul Garda itinerary
A relaxed three days is the sweet spot: one day for the town, one for the water, and one for a day trip.
Day 1: Limone itself
Morning: explore the historic centre before it gets busy.
If you want the history explained rather than simply wandering:

Take an early ferry across the lake.
Explore Malcesine first, then ride the Monte Baldo cable car if visibility is good.
Return to Limone for your last evening.

Do you need a car for Limone sul Garda?
Not if you are mainly staying in Limone and using the ferries.
The centre is small, and Malcesine is easy to reach by ferry.
We would rent a car if:
- Limone is part of a bigger road trip;
- you want Strada della Forra;
- you want more remote Lake Garda stops;
- you are travelling onward after Limone.
KEEP IN MIND: Limone has no train station, so you arrive by road or by ferry.
By public transport. There is no direct train, but you can take a train to Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione or Peschiera del Garda, then connect by bus (via Salò) or, in season, by ferry.

We wouldn’t rent a car just to explore Limone, but it becomes much more useful if you’re driving Strada della Forra or building a longer Lake Garda road trip.

The most scenic arrival is the cross-lake ferry from Malcesine (€3.50), which runs mid-May to early October.
By car
A car gives you the most freedom for day trips, but note that Limone’s centre is tight, and lakeside parking fills fast in summer.

Does Limone sul Garda have a train station?
No. The nearest stations are Desenzano del Garda-Sirmione and Peschiera del Garda, from which you continue by bus or seasonal ferry.
Is Limone sul Garda expensive?
It is mid-range for the Italian lakes. Lakeside drinks and hotels carry a premium view, but casual food, the cycle path, and the Limonaia are affordable.
Can you swim in Limone sul Garda?
Yes. The beaches are small and pebbly, and the water is clean and cool, warmest in July and August.

Limone is small, but that is part of why it works.
Spend one day enjoying the lemon houses, old streets and suspended cycle path, then use the next days for the lake, mountains or a ferry trip.
If we came back, we would still prioritize the cycle path, one afternoon on the water and Malcesine.
If you have longer, that is when we would add Verona or a full-day Dolomites excursion rather than trying to stretch Limone itself into five days.
