Is Cernobbio worth visiting?

Yes, for us, it was the perfect afternoon visit.

Cernobbio is the quiet alternative to Lake Como’s busy Instagram towns (like Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna), and it’s a perfect afternoon trip.

But let’s be clear, Cernobbio is not the place to base yourself for your vacation.

Hotel options are limited, and there is not that much to do in this small town, so unless staying at Villa d’Este is the whole point of your trip, sleep in Menaggio or Varenna and take the ferry to visit this town for the afternoon.

Visit for a day if:

• You want a quiet, less crowded stop that’s easy to reach
• You’re already spending time in Como and want a calm half-day add-on.
• You want to see Villa d’Este without paying for a room.

Skip it if:

• You want the buzz and crowds of Bellagio.
• You’re looking for an overnight base: Como has far more options across price points, and quieter towns like Gravedona and Colico suit longer lake stays better.
• Budget is the priority, since Cernobbio leans upscale even for lunch.

The best things to do in Cernobbio

Cernobbio is quite small, so everything fits into an afternoon trip from Como.

We’ve put it roughly the way we have done it: villas and gardens first, then the promenade and an aperitivo to finish.

1. Visit Villa d’Este

This is without a doubt why Cernobbio is worth visiting!

KEEP IN MIND: The famous villa is actually a private five-star hotel, with no walk-in access to the gardens and no entry ticket.

The way we did it: book a table or a terrace drink at the Veranda restaurant, which is the only realistic route to the grounds and the famous floating pool without paying for a room.

• 💰 Cost: Free to see from the lakefront, but we recommend booking a Veranda meal or having a terrace drink, with afternoon tea at around €40 ($45) per person
• 📍 Getting there: About a 10-minute walk from Piazza Risorgimento along Via Regina
• 👔 Dress code: Casual chic for men at dinner at the Veranda
• 🏛️ History: Built in 1568 for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, later home to Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales

2. Walk the lakeside promenade and Piazza Risorgimento

The promenade is our favourite part of Cernobbio, and we think it’s also one of the prettiest promenades on the entire lake (the one in Varenna is a bit more romantic).

We’d time it for late afternoon and end with an aperitivo on Piazza Risorgimento, the lakefront square with the Art Nouveau ferry pier, as the light drops.

• 💰 Cost: Promenade is free and of course always open
• 📍 Getting there: This is the centre of town; ferries from Como land right here
• 📸 Photo spot: The Art Nouveau pier, shot from the promenade’s south side with the mountains behind
• 🏖️ Summer swim: Lido di Cernobbio, at the end of Riva di Cernobbio a few steps from the pier, has deckchairs, umbrellas, and a pool
• ⛪ Detour: The parish church of San Vincenzo sits in the old lanes just above the square

3. Explore Villa Bernasconi

Villa Bernasconi is the one villa in town you can actually walk into, and we love that the facade wears the family silk trade: silkworms, butterflies, and mulberry leaves woven into the Art Nouveau detailing.

It’s a short visit, so we’d plan it as an hour alongside the promenade walk.

• 🕒 Hours: Friday to Monday and public holidays, 10:00 to 18:00
• 📍 Getting there: Largo Alfredo Campanini 2, a few steps from Villa Erba, about a 10-minute walk from the ferry pier
• 💡 Tip: Buy your ticket at the entrance

4. Stroll Villa Erba’s lakefront park

The park is more visit-worthy than the villa, since the villa is now more of an exhibition center and its interiors are often closed for private events.

Even so, walking the grounds of the estate where film director Luchino Visconti spent his summers is one of the nicest free-ish things you can do in town.

• 💰 Cost: The park opens on a few days for free, when there is no event, so make sure to check their website (see below)
• 📍 Getting there: Largo Luchino Visconti 4, next door to Villa Bernasconi

5. Find Giardino della Valle

This small botanical garden along the Garovo stream is the hidden gem we’d send you to: an ex-dumping site restored by a resident into ponds, wooden bridges, sculptures, and a bookcrossing corner.

Most people walk straight past the entrance, which is exactly why we like it. Perfect for a 10-minute visit!

• 💰 Cost: Free, open year-round
• 📍 Getting there: A few minutes’ walk uphill from the centre, following the Garovo stream towards Villa d’Este
• 🌸 Best season: Spring for the blooms, autumn for the foliage

6. Visit Villa Pizzo

Villa Pizzo is one of our favourite garden villas.

It’s one of the oldest noble estates on the lake, with ten kilometres (six miles) of garden paths and a guest list that once included Alessandro Volta.

KEEP IN MIND: you must make a reservation in advance as you cannot get your tickets at the door.

• 💰 Cost: €15 ($17) adults, €10 ($11) under 18
• 🕒 Hours: Year-round; tours last about 1 to 1.5 hours
• 📍 Getting there: Via Regina 46, about a 15-minute walk from the centre, 400 m (0.25 miles) past Villa d’Este

7. Hike Monte Bisbino and the Via dei Monti Lariani

If you want to earn your aperitivo, Monte Bisbino rises 1,325 m (4,347 ft) straight above town, with WWI-era Cadorna Line trenches near the summit and views reaching into the Swiss Alps.

Cernobbio is also kilometre zero of the Via dei Monti Lariani, the 125 km (78 miles) hiking trail along the lake’s western mountains, so we’d walk even a short first stretch for a completely different view of the lake.

• 🥾 Trail: The Via dei Monti Lariani starts at Piazza Mazzini, marked with red-white-red signs by CAI, the Italian Alpine Club; section 1 runs 28 km (17 miles) to the Intelvi Valley
• 🚗 Shortcut: A road from Cernobbio via Rovenna reaches the Bisbino summit, so you can drive up and walk the ridge instead

8. See Cernobbio from the water

Some of Cernobbio’s best views, like Villa d’Este and Villa Pizzo, only properly show themselves from the lake, so a boat tour is a must-do!

Tours depart from Como, a 10-minute ferry ride away, and late afternoon departures catch the villas in the best light.

• 💰 Cost: Varies by tour length and group size; shared tours are the budget option, private boats the splurge
• 📍 Departure point: Como, next to Cernobbio

Getting to Cernobbio

Cernobbio is one of the easiest towns on the lake to reach, which is exactly why it works so well as an afternoon trip.

• 🚌 From Como: The ASF C10 bus, a ferry from Como’s lakefront, or a 10-minute drive; ferry connections also link Cernobbio with other lake towns in season

Cernobbio doesn’t compete with Bellagio’s crowds or Tremezzina’s big-name villas, and it isn’t trying to.

But Cernobbio is such a peaceful and quiet lake town that makes it very special.

Come over from Como for an afternoon, see the villas and the promenade, have an aperitivo, and head back.

You’ll have seen the most refined corner of the lake without paying its hotel prices, as long as you know what Villa d’Este actually is (a hotel and not a villa) before you show up expecting to walk in.
