Cernobbio Guide: 8 Best Things To Do In This Small Town

We’d visit Cernobbio for an afternoon rather than base an entire Lake Como trip here.

It is one of the least touristy and most authentic towns on the lake, with beautiful villas, gardens and one of our favourite romantic promenades, but there simply isn’t enough to fill several days unless staying at Villa d’Este is the whole reason for your trip.

For us, the best way to experience Cernobbio is to come over from Como, see Villa d’Este and one or two of the smaller villas or gardens, then finish beside the lake with an aperitivo around Piazza Risorgimento.

If you want busy ferry-hopping and a long list of attractions, stay elsewhere.

But if you want a slower afternoon of gardens, architecture and lakeside views, Cernobbio is absolutely worth adding to your Lake Como itinerary.

Is Cernobbio worth visiting?

Yes, but we think Cernobbio works best as a half-day or afternoon trip rather than somewhere to build your whole Lake Como holiday around.

It is a lot calmer than Menaggio or Varenna, and that is part of why you come here.

You want to see the beautiful villas, gardens, a slow walk beside the lake and an aperitivo, not because there are twenty attractions to tick off.

For us, that actually makes Cernobbio more enjoyable. There is no pressure to rush from sight to sight.

Visit for a day if:

• You want a quiet, less crowded stop that’s easy to reach
• You’re already spending time in Como and want a calm half-day add-on.
• You want to see Villa d’Este without paying for a room.

Skip it if:

• You want the buzz and crowds of Bellagio.
• You’re looking for an overnight base: Como has more options across price points, and quieter towns like Gravedona and Colico suit longer lake stays better.
• Budget is the priority, since Cernobbio leans upscale even for lunch.

Our verdict: stay in Como for more choice of hotels, restaurants and things to do, then use Cernobbio as your afternoon by the lake. The exception is if staying at Villa d’Este is itself one of the experiences you want from the trip.

The best things to do in Cernobbio

Cernobbio is small enough that you can comfortably see the highlights in one afternoon.

We would start with the villas and gardens while they are open, then leave the lakefront promenade and aperitivo until late afternoon when the light is better.

If time is limited, prioritise Villa d’Este, one smaller villa or garden, and the promenade.

1. Visit Villa d’Este

This is without a doubt why Cernobbio is worth visiting, but there is one important catch: you cannot simply buy an entrance ticket and walk through the gardens.

It is a private five-star hotel rather than a public villa.

The way we experienced it was by booking a terrace drink at the Veranda.

That gives you a reason to enter the property without paying for a room and turns the visit into part of the afternoon rather than something you only look at through the gates.

If seeing Villa d’Este is important to you, organise this before arriving in Cernobbio rather than assuming you can buy admission on the day.

Summary:

• 💰 Cost: Free to see from the lakefront, but we recommend booking a Veranda meal or having a terrace drink, with afternoon tea at around €40 ($45) per person

2. Walk the lakeside promenade and Piazza Risorgimento

The promenade is our favourite part of Cernobbio, and we think it’s also one of the prettiest promenades on the entire lake (the one in Varenna is a bit more romantic).

We’d time it for late afternoon and end with an aperitivo on Piazza Risorgimento, the lakefront square with the Art Nouveau ferry pier, as the light drops.

If we only had an hour in Cernobbio, this is where we would spend it.

You don’t need an itinerary here, just walk the waterfront, stop around Piazza Risorgimento and let this be the slow part of your Lake Como day.

3. Explore Villa Bernasconi

Villa Bernasconi is the one villa in town you can actually walk into, and we love that the facade wears the family silk trade: silkworms, butterflies, and mulberry leaves woven into the Art Nouveau detailing.

It’s a short visit, so we’d plan it as an hour alongside the promenade walk.

If you only want to visit one villa interior in Cernobbio, we would choose Bernasconi.

Unlike Villa d’Este, you can actually buy a normal ticket and explore inside, and it gives you something completely different from the garden-focused villas around the lake.

• 🕒 Hours: Friday to Monday and public holidays, 10:00 to 18:00
• 📍 Getting there: Largo Alfredo Campanini 2, a few steps from Villa Erba, about a 10-minute walk from the ferry pier

4. Stroll Villa Erba’s lakefront park

We would come to Villa Erba for the grounds rather than the villa interior.

The building now functions mainly as an exhibition and event venue, so interior access is inconsistent.

The park is the part we think is actually worth fitting into a Cernobbio afternoon, especially because it sits right beside Villa Bernasconi.

If the park is closed for a private event, we would simply skip Villa Erba rather than reorganise the day around it.

5. Find Giardino della Valle

Giardino della Valle is the kind of place we love finding in small Lake Como towns because you can easily walk straight past it without realising what is hidden beside the stream.

The garden was created from a former dumping site and now has ponds, little wooden bridges, sculptures and a bookcrossing corner.

It only takes around 10 minutes to explore, which is exactly why we would add it between the centre and Villa d’Este rather than treat it as a separate attraction.

Go if you are already walking this way. We would not cross Cernobbio specifically for it.

• 📍 Getting there: A few minutes’ walk uphill from the centre, following the Garovo stream towards Villa d’Este
• 🌸 Best season: Spring for the blooms, autumn for the foliage

6. Visit Villa Pizzo

Villa Pizzo is one of our favourite garden villas.

It’s one of the oldest noble estates on the lake, with ten kilometres (six miles) of garden paths and a guest list that once included Alessandro Volta.

Choose Villa Pizzo if the gardens are what interest you most.

If you are more interested in architecture and interiors, we would prioritise Villa Bernasconi instead.

KEEP IN MIND: you must make a reservation in advance as you cannot get your tickets at the door.

• 🕒 Hours: Year-round; tours last about 1 to 1.5 hours
• 📍 Getting there: Via Regina 46, about a 15-minute walk from the centre, 400 m (0.25 miles) past Villa d’Este

7. Hike Monte Bisbino and the Via dei Monti Lariani

Monte Bisbino is not the casual hiking option you squeeze between Villa d’Este and aperitivo.

The mountain rises 1,325 m (4,347 ft) above Cernobbio, and the full routes here involve proper distance and elevation.

If hiking is one of the main reasons you are visiting this side of Lake Como, this is a brilliant way to see the landscape from above.

But for a normal afternoon in Cernobbio, we would choose a shorter section of the Via dei Monti Lariani or drive higher toward Bisbino and walk from there.

Cernobbio is kilometre zero of the 125 km (78 mi) Via dei Monti Lariani, so you do not need to complete a massive hike to experience part of the route.

Who should do it?

Do it if: hiking is a genuine priority and you have proper footwear, enough time and suitable weather.

Skip the full climb if: Cernobbio is simply one stop in a villa-focused Lake Como itinerary.

8. See Cernobbio from the water

If you are going to spend money on one extra experience around Cernobbio, a boat trip makes more sense to us than trying to cram in another villa.

Villa d’Este and Villa Pizzo were designed around the lake, and their scale is much easier to appreciate from the water than from the road.

Tours leave from Como, so this works particularly well if you are already using Como as your base.

Which boat tour should you choose?

Shared boat: best if you mainly want the views without spending luxury-trip money.

Private boat: best for a honeymoon, anniversary or if the boat itself is meant to be one of the highlights of the trip.

Skip it: if you are travelling on a tight budget and already spending plenty of time on the public ferries.

Getting to Cernobbio

Cernobbio is one of the easiest Lake Como towns to visit from Como.

We would take the ferry if the schedule works for your day. It drops you directly at Piazza Risorgimento and makes arriving in Cernobbio part of the experience rather than simply another bus ride.

From Como you can:

• ⛴️ Take the ferry: our choice for the views and easiest arrival into the centre.
• 🚌 Take the C10 bus: useful if ferry times do not work for your plans.
• 🚗 Drive: around ten minutes without traffic, but unnecessary if you are already staying centrally in Como.

If you are coming from farther away, get yourself to Como first and treat Cernobbio as the short second leg.

Then keep your Venice → Lake Como reference if desired.

Is Cernobbio worth adding to your Lake Como trip?

Yes, but we treat Cernobbio as one really good afternoon rather than stretching it into several days.

Come over from Como, choose one or two villas or gardens, walk the promenade as the light starts to drop and finish with an aperitivo beside the lake.

If we had to prioritise, we’d choose Villa d’Este for the experience, Villa Bernasconi or Villa Pizzo depending on whether you prefer architecture or gardens, and the promenade before leaving.

We would stay overnight only if Villa d’Este itself is part of the trip. Otherwise, Como is the more practical base and Cernobbio becomes exactly what we think it does best: a slower, more refined break from Lake Como’s busier towns.
