Best Things to Do in Gravedona (Lake Como’s Quietest Town)

If we want a quiet northern Lake Como base with hiking, lake views and almost none of the Bellagio-style crowds, we choose Gravedona.

This is not a town where we would build a huge sightseeing checklist. Gravedona is better for slow mornings beside the lake, one or two stops, hikes into the valleys behind town, and easy access to nearby Domaso and Colico.

For us, the best things to do in Gravedona are walking the peaceful lakefront, visiting Santa Maria del Tiglio and hiking into the Livo Valley.

One day is enough for Gravedona itself, but two or three nights can work really well if you want to use it as a quiet northern-Lake Como base.

Below, we’ll show you what we think is genuinely worth doing, where we’d stay and whether Gravedona is actually the right base for your trip.

If you’ve already seen the postcard shots of Bellagio and Varenna and want to know what the quieter side of the lake actually feels like, this is it.

Is Gravedona worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the quieter, slower side of Lake Como.

👉 KEEP IN MIND: There isn’t a long list of must-see attractions packed into the town itself. If you want slow days with beautiful views, then this is the perfect town! This is not a checklist destination. If you want that, then visit Bellagio or take a look at our full list of things to do in Lake Como.

The town itself is small, so one day is enough for the promenade, Santa Maria del Tiglio and the centre.

But if hiking, northern Lake Como day trips and slow evenings matter more to you than ticking off sights, Gravedona can work really well as a 2- to 3-night base.

Stay here if:

• You want a quiet, relaxing stay away from the busier towns
• You’re exploring the northern lake and have a car
• A slower pace matters more to you than a packed itinerary

Skip it if:

• You want a long list of attractions within walking distance (visit Bellagio)
• You’re relying entirely on ferries (the schedule here is limited)

Our verdict: choose Gravedona if peace and outdoor access matter more than sightseeing density. If you want ferries every few minutes, restaurants everywhere, and lots of things to do, we would go to Varenna and Bellagio.

How many days do you need in Gravedona?

One full day is enough for Gravedona itself.

• With one day, walk the promenade, visit Santa Maria del Tiglio and either explore the old centre or do a shorter walk.
• With two days, add the Livo Valley hike.
• With three days, use Gravedona as your base and add Domaso, Colico or another northern-Lake Como stop.

We would never stay three days just to keep sightseeing inside Gravedona itself.

The best things to do in Gravedona

Gravedona is not somewhere we would try to turn into a ten-attraction checklist.

The strongest experiences here fall into three groups:

• lakefront and old town
• hiking and nature
• using Gravedona as a quiet base for the northern lake

If your time is limited, we would prioritise the promenade, Santa Maria del Tiglio and Livo Valley.

Walk along the lakeside promenade and town centre

Gravedona ed Uniti is a small town born from the merger of Gravedona, Consiglio di Rumo, and Germasino.

The best way to experience Gravedona is simply to slow down and walk along its peaceful lakefront.

When we walked it on a weekday afternoon in May, we passed maybe a dozen people in twenty minutes, a few locals on bikes, and a few people walking and having coffee. Compare that to Bellagio’s promenade, where you can’t get a quiet photo.

👉 Compared to the central towns, it felt much QUIETER and more local to us; no crowds, just open views of the lake and mountains.

If we only had an hour in Gravedona, this is where we’d spend it.

👉 Start near Piazza Prà Castello and walk the old streets; it’s not about big sights here, but the atmosphere.

See Santa Maria del Tiglio

If you only had the time for two things to do in Gravedona, we’d make it the promenade and this 12th-century Romanesque church.

The black-and-white stone façade is what catches your eye first, but what makes the stop worthwhile is how different the church feels from the grand villas and ornate churches you see elsewhere around Lake Como.

You do not need long here.

We would allow 10 minutes, including time to walk around the exterior and step inside if it is open.

Explore Palazzo Gallio

A historic lakeside palace with four towers, surrounded by gardens, fountains, and mountain views.

The palace stands out for its four towers and lakeside position, and the grounds are the main reason we would stop.

Visit Livo Valley

A beautiful ALPINE VALLEY a little bit above Gravedona with hiking trails and wildlife, genuinely worth the detour if you want real nature rather than another lakefront walk.

We recommend this hike (PEGLIO DOSSO DEL LIRO)

A pleasant walk in the Livo Valley, on the mountains of Lake Como, starting from Peglio.

The route takes place in an anticlockwise loop, reaching Areccio and then continuing the tour, crossing Dosso del Liro.

We did this loop in May, and it took us just under three hours at an easy pace, with the best views coming right after the climb out of Areccio. Bring water as there’s no café until you’re back near Peglio.

From here, you return to the starting point, passing by the Church of San Martino and by Traversa.

Try Lake Como Adventure Park

It’s not actually in Gravedona itself; it’s up in the hills at Sant’Anna di Germasino, about a 20-minute drive away on a narrow road, so prepare for a winding drive.

Once you arrive at Lake Como Adventure Park, you’ll find 4 paths of varying difficulty (two for kids, one medium for teens/adults, one for adults only) spread across more than 30 obstacles in the trees, including Tibetan bridges, ziplines, and cableways.

Courses are height- and age-gated rather than open to everyone, with minimum heights ranging from around 110cm to 155cm depending on the route, so check before promising it to younger kids.

There’s a small bar on-site for snacks and drinks.

We would prioritise this for families who want an active half-day.

Take a ferry from Gravedona

Gravedona does have a passenger ferry, but we would not choose it as our main ferry-hopping base unless the timetable works well for your dates.

Service is much more limited than around Menaggio, Bellagio or Varenna, especially outside the main season.

That does not make Gravedona a bad base.

It just means you should choose it because you want quiet and northern-Lake Como access, not because you expect to jump between central-lake towns every hour.

Check the current timetable before booking accommodation if ferries are an important part of your plans.

Walk or bike the promenade to Domaso

If Livo Valley sounds too strenuous, we’d choose the Domaso promenade instead.

The route is almost completely flat and keeps you beside the lake, so it gives you scenery without committing to a proper mountain hike.

There are over 50 road cycling routes around Gravedona Ed Uniti, offering a range of experiences.

Some cycling routes also provide views of peaks like the Monte Legnone Summit.

Try kitesurfing or windsurfing

This stretch of the northern lake is known for consistent, reliable wind, making it a long-standing hub for water sports rather than just lakefront sightseeing.

The wind here picks up in the afternoon, which is why you’ll spot kite and windsurf schools set up along this stretch rather than further south on the lake.

The northern lake is one of the better areas around Lake Como for wind sports because the afternoon wind is more reliable.

But if kitesurfing or windsurfing is the main reason for your trip, we would actually stay in Domaso rather than Gravedona.

Domaso has more dedicated water-sports infrastructure and is better set up for travellers coming specifically to get on the water.

Gravedona makes more sense if water sports are just one part of a quieter trip.

Get gelato at La Carapiña

La Carapiña is a small, artisanal gelateria that keeps coming up in other travelers’ Gravedona write-ups.

We stopped at La Carapiña and tried the pistachio and lemon flavours.

The lemon is the obvious Lake Como choice, but pistachio was actually our favourite because it tasted so fresh and well-made!

Where to stay in Gravedona

Hotel Regina

If we were choosing one hotel in Gravedona, Hotel Regina would be our first look.

It sits directly on the lake, has a private beach and heated pool, and is still only around a 10-minute walk from the centre.

That makes it the best balance between a relaxing lake stay and being able to walk into town.

Hotel 2000

Choose Hotel 2000 if being able to step straight into the historic centre matters more than having a resort-style property.

It makes more sense if you want cafés, restaurants and the lake within an easy walk.

Tullio Hotel

We’d choose Tullio Hotel if pool, spa and a more relaxed hotel experience matter more than being directly in the old centre.

It is the better fit for couples who want downtime at the hotel rather than using the room purely as a base.

Getting to and around Gravedona

We would strongly consider a car to go to Gravedona.

You can manage without a car during the main ferry season, but the car becomes much more useful if you want to:

• hike in the Livo Valley;
• visit Lake Como Adventure Park;
• explore the quieter northern villages;
• travel outside peak ferry season;
• continue around Lake Como rather than staying in one town.

If you are only visiting Gravedona for one day and arriving by bus or ferry, you do not need one.

Gravedona vs. Domaso: which should you pick?

These two sit less than 10 minutes apart by ferry and bus, so the real question isn’t “which lake town” but “which base.”

Gravedona is the HISTORY and QUIET PICK: the church, the palace, the old town centre, and a genuinely slower pace. It’s better for travelers who want a peaceful base and don’t mind a shorter list of sights.

Domaso is the more SET-UP-FOR-TOURISTS pick, with more campsites, restaurants, and water sports infrastructure built up around it over the years, and it’s the better base if windsurfing or kitesurfing is the main reason for your trip.

If you have a car, you can easily stay in one and treat the other as a half-day stop rather than choosing just one.

Final thoughts on visiting Gravedona

Gravedona is worth visiting because it does not feel like the busiest parts of Lake Como.

You will not find a huge checklist of famous things to do here.

Instead, you get a quiet lakefront, one of the north lake’s most distinctive churches, hiking in the valleys behind town and easy access to places like Domaso and Colico.

If we were visiting for the day, we would walk the promenade, see Santa Maria del Tiglio and choose one outdoor activity.

If we were using Gravedona as a base, we would stay two or three nights, have a car if possible and use the extra time for Livo Valley and the northern lake.

If you want famous villas and constant ferry connections, stay farther south.

If you want space, quiet and a slower side of Lake Como, Gravedona makes much more sense.
