Menaggio Italy Guide: Top Things To Do + Itinerary for 2026!

If we want to stay in the middle of Lake Como without dealing with the crowds of Bellagio or Varenna every evening, we go to Menaggio.

You still get excellent ferry connections across the central lake, but Menaggio feels much more like a town where people actually live once the day-tourists disappear.

It also gives you something the postcard towns don’t do quite as well: easy access to hiking, swimming and even a day trip into Switzerland.

For us, the best things to do in Menaggio are walking the lakefront, getting out on the water and hiking above town toward Rifugio Menaggio.

If you only have one day, the centre and waterfront are easy to explore. Stay two or three nights and Menaggio becomes a really practical base for seeing the rest of Lake Como without changing hotels every day.

Is Menaggio worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you want central Lake Como access without staying in some of its busiest tourist towns.

Menaggio doesn’t have quite the same instant postcard effect as Bellagio or Varenna, but that isn’t why we would choose it.

Its biggest advantage is how easy it makes everything else.

You can ferry to Bellagio or Varenna during the day, hike above town in the morning, swim in the afternoon, and come back to somewhere calmer in the evening and enjoy an aperitivo by the lake.

Stay here if:

• You want perfect-lake access without the crowds of Bellagio
• You’re combining your trip with Lugano or Switzerland
• You prefer a practical, local town over an Instagram-worthy one

Skip it if:

• The postcard, iconic-views version of Lake Como is the whole point of your trip. That’s Bellagio and Varenna.
• You want the best restaurants and parties. Como city or Bellagio are a better base for that.

Our verdict: if you are choosing a Lake Como base for ferries, outdoor activities and practicality, Menaggio is one of our favourite options. If the most romantic possible setting matters more, we’d choose Varenna instead.

How many days do you need in Menaggio?

We’d stay TWO or THREE nights in Menaggio.

With one day, explore the historic centre, walk the promenade and spend some time beside the lake.

With two days, add one bigger experience. We’d choose between hiking to Rifugio Menaggio or getting out on Lake Como by boat for a full day tour or a 1-hour tour.

With three days, use Menaggio’s location to go to Bellagio or Varenna, or take the direct bus across the border to Lugano.

If you are moving between several Lake Como bases rather than staying in one place, one full day is enough for Menaggio itself.

Top things to do in Menaggio

Menaggio isn’t somewhere we would try to cram in twenty things to do.

The best experiences here are being beside the lake, getting onto the water and using the mountains behind the town.

If you only have one day, prioritise the promenade and historic centre, then choose between the beach and a short boat trip.

If you’re staying longer, that is when we would add Val Sanagra, Rifugio Menaggio or one of the longer Lake Como experiences.

1. Walk the lakeside promenade and Piazza Garibaldi

Menaggio’s lakeside promenade is a flat, palm-tree-lined walk along the water, running from the ferry dock to Piazza Garibaldi, the main square lined with bars, restaurants, and gelato spots.

We think this is the single best free thing in town.

If we only had an hour in Menaggio, this is where we’d spend it.

The waterfront is especially nice later in the day when the day-trip traffic starts slowing and Piazza Garibaldi fills for aperitivo.

You get the same across-the-water view of Bellagio and the mountains that people pay for elsewhere, without the elbow-to-elbow crowds of Bellagio’s own waterfront.

2. Visit the historic centre and its churches

Behind the lakefront, Menaggio’s historic centre climbs uphill in narrow, medieval stair-stepped streets around Via Calvi, where you’ll find the small church of Santa Marta and, higher up, the parish church of Santo Stefano, whose entrance sits on the old Roman road, the Antica Strada Regina.

It’s worth a small walk to visit the centre and have an aperitivo there.

3. Visit Villa Mylius-Vigoni

Villa Mylius-Vigoni is a villa filled with history and has a landscaped park in the hamlet of Loveno, run by the German-Italian cultural centre Villa Vigoni, with gardens and panoramic views over the lake.

KEEP IN MIND: It’s a guided-only visit, historically on Thursdays at 3 pm only, March to October excluding August, about an hour, in Italian, German, or English, and you must reserve by emailing reception@villavigoni.eu. You cannot just turn up.

4. Explore Loveno, Nobiallo, and the Antica Via Regina

Just outside the centre sit two quieter hamlets: Loveno, uphill among old villas and gardens (and home to Villa Mylius-Vigoni), and Nobiallo, the old fishing hamlet on the road north of town with its leaning bell tower.

From Nobiallo you can pick up a preserved stretch of the Antica Via Regina, the Roman road that connected the lake to the Alps for centuries, which climbs past panoramic points like the Sasso Rancio cliff hanging over the water.

What we liked about walking away from central Menaggio was how quickly the atmosphere changed. Once we reached Loveno, it felt much more residential with small houses and their beautiful maintained gardens than the lakefront around Piazza Garibaldi.

5. Discover Val Sanagra Park

Val Sanagra Park is a protected valley just above Menaggio where trails follow the Sanagra river past stone bridges, a rural museum landscape of old workshops, and relics like La Chioderia, a former mill turned nail factory, and the Mulino Carliseppi grain mill.

For us, this is the easiest way to get away from the crowds without leaving Menaggio, and it costs nothing. It’s a completely different, greener world than the lakefront.

6. Hike to Rifugio Menaggio and Monte Grona

Rifugio Menaggio sits at 1,400 m (4,593 ft) on the southern slope of Monte Grona, serving food and drinks with a huge terrace view over the central lake, and the summit push to Monte Grona at 1,736 m (5,696 ft) gives you three lakes at once: Como, Lugano, and Piano.

In our opinion, this is the best view-per-euro in the whole area, since the only cost is lunch at the rifugio.

Strong hikers can continue along the ridge toward Monte Bregagno at 2,107 m (6,912 ft) for an even bigger day.

• 💵 Cost: free (budget for lunch at the rifugio)
• 🕘 When: rifugio open daily in summer; check ahead in shoulder season
• 📍 Getting there: trail starts at Breglia, about 6 km (3.7 miles) above Menaggio by car or local bus, then roughly 1.5 hours to the rifugio and another hour to the Grona summit
• 💡 Our tip: start early; the southern slope gets full sun by late morning, and the terrace fills at lunch

7. Get out on Lake Como from Menaggio

If we were going to spend money on one activity in Menaggio, we’d always put it toward getting out on the lake.

Menaggio is perfectly positioned for exploring the central part of Lake Como, so you don’t need to travel to Como or Bellagio first just to start a boat experience.

What we like here is that you have several completely different options depending on your budget and how much of your day you want to spend on the water.

We’d choose between them like this:

• 1-hour shared cruise: best if you want a quick taste of the lake without losing most of your sightseeing day.
• Self-drive rental: best if freedom and swimming matter most.
• Private full-day tour: best if Lake Como itself is the main experience and you want to make a full day of it.

Take a 1-hour boat tour from Menaggio

If you want to experience Lake Como from the water but don’t want a boat trip to take over your whole day, this is the option we would look at first.

The shared cruise leaves from Menaggio and focuses on the central part of Lake Como, so it works particularly well if you are already using Menaggio as your base.

The big advantage is the time commitment: after roughly an hour on the water, you still have most of the day available for the promenade, beach, hiking or a ferry trip elsewhere.

We’d choose this over a self-drive boat if you mainly want to sit back and see the central lake scenery rather than worry about driving the boat yourself.

Rent your own boat for more freedom

If swimming stops and choosing your own route matter more than having a guide, we’d still look at a self-drive rental.

You can set your own route past destinations like Villa del Balbianello and Villa La Gaeta, the lakeside villa from the final scenes of Casino Royale.

• 💡 Our tip: rent your boat in the morning when there is less wind, and the waters are calmer (even though it’s a lake, there are still quite some waves in the afternoon)

Spend a full day exploring Lake Como by private boat

If the lake itself is one of the main reasons for your trip and you have the budget for a bigger experience, there is also a private eight-hour tour starting from Menaggio.

This is a very different purchase from the short shared cruise.

Instead of squeezing a little boat sightseeing into your Menaggio day, you make the boat trip the day itself.

We’d look at this for:

• a honeymoon;
• anniversary;
• family trip;
• small group splitting the cost;
• or anyone who would rather spend one full day seeing Lake Como from the water than organising multiple ferries.

8. Spend an afternoon at a beach or lido

Menaggio has three swim options:

1) Victoria Beach, the very luxurious and expensive beach club of the Grand Hotel Victoria with two infinity pools (one adults-only) and a private beach;

2) the Lido of Menaggio, the classic beach bar with two pools, lake access, and beach volleyball. You need to pay to get inside!

3) Lerai Beach, the free public pebble beach with a kiosk and showers.

Our honest opinion: if you mainly want to swim and lie beside the lake, take a towel to Lerai Beach. We’d rather save the lido entry fee and put that money toward dinner or one of the boat trips instead.

Summary:

• 🏖️ What you’ll do: infinity pools at Victoria Beach (150 euro for a sunbed for 2 people), classic lido day at the Lido of Menaggio, or a free swim at Lerai
• 💵 Cost: Lerai is free, whereas for the Lido and Victoria Beach you must pay an entrance fee

9. Play the Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club

We didn’t play the course ourselves, so we would only put this high on your Menaggio itinerary if golf is already part of the reason for your trip.

The Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club is one of Italy’s oldest, an 18-hole course in traditional British style in the hills at Grandola ed Uniti, with the lake in view from several holes.

KEEP IN MIND: this is an expensive golfer’s stop. Green fees run from €100 to €120 ($115 to $140), a handicap certificate is required, and reservations are mandatory.

• 💵 Cost: €100 to €120 ($115 to $140) green fee

10. Ferry-hop to Bellagio, Varenna, and Villa Carlotta

This ferry access is the biggest reason we think Menaggio works so well as an overnight base.

Menaggio sits inside the “golden triangle,” so Bellagio, Varenna, and the gardens of Villa Carlotta (one stop south, at Cadenabbia/Tremezzo) are only a short ride away.

Our favourite way to go about it: base yourself in Menaggio or Varenna and catch a 9 am ferry to Bellagio before the day-tripper boats from Como arrive. You get the postcard views, and in the evening, you can return to Menaggio or Varenna.

• 💵 Cost: €5.50 ($6.50) one-way on the central lake, €15.20 ($18) day pass via navigazionelaghi.it

• 📍 Getting there: the ferry dock is on the main lakefront

Day trip from Menaggio: Lugano, Switzerland

Menaggio is one of the only Lake Como towns with a direct bus to Lugano, which makes a Switzerland day trip really interesting.

The C12 bus leaves from Piazza Roma, takes about 45 minutes to cover 24km, and costs €8 ($10) one-way; book via asfautolinee.it.

Why bother crossing the border? Because Lugano is a different world for the price of a bus ticket.

It’s Switzerland with an Italian accent: the same palm trees and lake-and-mountains views you’ve been enjoying on Como, but with a tidier lakefront, Swiss punctuality, and chocolate shops where the gelato counters would be.

A few hours is enough for the highlights:

• Walk the lakefront through Parco Ciani, Lugano’s big lakeside park,
• Have a coffee on Piazza della Riforma in the old town,
• Visit the chocolate and designer shops on Via Nassa,
• Ride the funicular up Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore for a huge view over Lake Lugano.

With a full day, the boat to the fishing village of Gandria is the classic add-on.

Summary:

• 🇨🇭 What you’ll do: visit a second country in under an hour: lakeside Parco Ciani, the old town around Piazza della Riforma, Via Nassa’s chocolate shops, and a funicular up Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore
• 💵 Cost: €8 ($10) one-way by C12 bus. Don’t forget to bring a card or francs; Lugano prices are Swiss prices
• 📍 Getting there: C12 from Piazza Roma, about 45 minutes for 24 km (15 miles)

Where to eat in Menaggio

• Our pick in town: Osteria il Pozzo.
• Worth walking uphill for: Trattoria La Vecchia Magnolia had amazing Lombard food, and the lake view made up for the walk and leaving the city centre.
• Best if you want to stay central: Hosteria de Menàs near Piazza Garibaldi.

• Walk the palm-lined lakeside promenade and Piazza Garibaldi
• Visit the stair-stepped lanes of the historic centre and step into Santa Marta and Santo Stefano
• Swim at Lerai Beach

Where to stay in Menaggio

Where you stay depends mainly on whether ferry access or having more space matters most.

If you plan to use Menaggio as your base for Bellagio, Varenna and the rest of the central lake, we would stay as close to the waterfront as possible.

If you are driving or staying longer and care more about parking, a pool, and apartment space, staying slightly outside the centre makes more sense.

Grand Hotel Menaggio (best for ferry access)

• Very luxurious hotel
• Pool right by the lake
• Spacious rooms
• Beautiful traditional style

👉 Feels like a calmer version of Bellagio, but just as scenic.

Le Pergole Aloha (best for space, parking and a pool)

• Brand-new apartment, renovated in 2024, with a private garden and private entrance
• Shared pool and large whirlpool with lake and mountain views
• Free covered private parking, quite rare in Menaggio

👉 The trade-off: it’s self-catering with no hotel service, and about a 10 to 15 minute walk into town.

One-day Menaggio itinerary

• Morning walk around town: We started with a coffee on Piazza Garibaldi and then walked the palm-lined promenade along the water. It’s nice early in the morning without tourists. From there we went up Via Calvi, stepping into the little church of Santa Marta, and climbed the stair-stepped lanes of the historic centre to the parish church of Santo Stefano. We went back along the shore to Nobiallo and its leaning bell tower before going back for lunch.

• Afternoon at the beach: We spent the rest of the day at Lerai Beach to have a swim and read a book with amazing views in the background.

• Evening: Aperitivo on the promenade, then dinner at Osteria il Pozzo in the centre.

• 🛏️ Sleep: Grand Hotel Menaggio for the classic lakefront stay and easiest ferry access, or Le Pergole Aloha if you’d rather have an apartment, parking, and a lake-view pool.

Staying longer than one day?

If we had another day in Menaggio, we would choose one bigger experience rather than adding more small attractions.

Final thoughts on our Menaggio Italy Guide

Yes, if location matters more to you than staying in Lake Como’s most photographed towns (Bellagio and Varenna).

Menaggio gives you easy ferries to Bellagio and Varenna, good hiking behind town, swimming, several ways to get out on the lake, and one of the easiest routes into Switzerland.

If we came back, we would use it as a two- or three-night base rather than simply stopping for a few hours.

We’d spend the first day exploring Menaggio itself, choose either Rifugio Menaggio or a boat experience for the second day, and then use the ferry connections rather than moving hotels again.

If your priority is pure romance and postcard scenery, choose Varenna.

If your priority is central location, breathing room and flexibility, Menaggio is one of the smartest places we think you can stay.
